Here is another I took last year in Volksfest wales:-

As I mentioned earlier, the electrically-pumped, headlamp washers & windscreen washers, were standard on Swedish specification, 1974 & 1975~79 VW Type 2s, because by then, it was obligatory for vehicles in Sweden, to have either high-pressure headlamp washers or low-pressure headlamp washers and wipers. To the best of my knowledge to date, these were not obligatory in the other Scandinavian countries; namely Denmark, Finland, Iceland & Norway, so Sweden will probably be the only consistently viable source of second-hand parts.

On pages 53 & 58 respectively, of the following book, there are references to two M-Code associated systems, of which both potentially involve, electrically-pumped front windscreen washers; although it would be possible, for pneumatically-pressurised washers, to be activated by an electrical solenoid-operated valve, for the wash/wipe mode.

Vincent Molenaar & Alexander Prinz, "VW Transporter & Microbus: Specification Guide 1967~1979", The Crowood Press, 2005, ISBN 1-86126-765-7.

M-288 - Headlamp washer installation: All models, 1974~79

M-652 - Interval switch on windscreen wipers and wash-wipe installation (interval circa 6 seconds): All models, 1973~79

So far, I have yet to establish whether the vehicles which were equipped with electrically-pumped, headlamp washers & windscreen washers, were also equipped with the intermittent wiper & wash/wipe facilities!

From the statement by "77westyberlin" « The headlight washer pump (VW part No. 211 955 679), operated when lights are on, and windshield washer is activated », I deduce that there is some form of relay in the electrical circuit, which probably derives its switch-current from terminal 56 (white cable) of the dashboard-mounted headlamp switch or headlamp dimmer relay.

Hence, when the headlamps are switched on, the relay will complete the circuit between the steering-column-mounted, combination windscreen & headlamp washer-switch and the headlamp-washer fluid pump (VW part No. 211 955 679). Hopefully, "77westyberlin" will be able to throw some further light on this; possibly providing details of the electrical cable colours & connections, relay and terminal labels.

These are the pages from the Official 1968~79 VW Type 2 Replacement Parts Catalogue, which seem to be appropriate to the system components, for the windscreen wiper, windscreen washer and headlamp washer.

The component descriptions are my own, based upon my own speculative interpretations of the line drawings alone. I have also included the VW part numbers, as provided by "77westyberlin". Given that Richard Atwell actually possesses both microfiches and a compatible microfiche reader, he might be able to clarify details of the component descriptions and possibly provide the corresponding VW part numbers.

Note that Item 16 on Page 101, probably represents both the steering-column mounted, combination switch, for windscreen wipers & washers (air-pressurised) for non-Swedish specification 1975~79 VW Type 2s and steering-column mounted, combination switch, for windscreen wipers & washers (electrically pumped) and headlamp washers (electrically pumped) for Swedish specification 1975~79 VW Type 2s.

Note that Item 11 on Page 102-10 and Item 29 on Page 103, are both right-hand, steering-column mounted stalk switches, which appear to be of the pattern used for windscreen wipers, plus windscreen and/or headlamp washers, on 1973/74 VW Type 2s.

Note that Item 12 on Page 102-10 and Item 39 on Page 103, are both electric water-pumps, so it would appear that there are (or should be!) separate electric water-pumps, for the headlamp washer and windscreen washer.

Note that Item 30 on Page 103, might be either a windscreen-wiper, intermittent delay relay or a headlamp washer-pump relay.

I don't recognise whether or not the vehicle illustrated above, bears a Swedish licence plate or that of some other country, but being a non-GB licence plate, the owner/driver is committing an offence, by omitting to fit a nationality plate (e.g. black S for Sweden, on an elliptical white background).

It this same vehicle (illustrated directly above), still has left-hand drive headlamps, it should be fitted with either left-hand beam converters or at least have the dipped-beam's asymmetric refractive segment blanked off, as was done to the headlamps of the vehicle illustrated below:

Notice also, the yellow-lensed, daytime running lights (not amber-lensed like direction indicators or North American specification, front parking lights and/or daytime running lights), positioned just above the front bumper, which illuminate automatically when the ignitin is switched on.

These were retro-fitted by Swedish owners, to avoid the alternative requirement, to drive during the daytime, with dipped headlamps.

Chris, it appears that the USA specification, dealership or aftermarket, front bumper overrriders which you are retro-fitting to your 1977 VW 2000 Westfalia Helsinki (illustrated below), are noticeably shorter (i.e. circa 50 mm or 2 inches) than the VW factory-fitted, rubber-covered, front-bumper overriders, incorporating the headlamp washer jets, as found on Swedish specification, 1974~79 VW Type 2s (illustrated above).

In an old copy (circa 1984 edition) of the American, J. C. Witney automotive parts catalogue, I believe there are some illustrations, of what appear to be much taller, 1968~72 & 1973~79 VW Type 2, bumper overriders, which might be more suitable for mounting headlamp washer jets.

Chris-do you have access to this bus? Any chance of closer pics of the over-riders and jets?

Also, i've tried deciphering my m-code but there are several unknowns......got the m-codes for the orange bus?
Unfortunatly the owner has ditched them, but I may be able to help you with some detail. I know the bus came standard with an eiberspatcher heater underneath & the front panel is holed with grommets for the pipes to come through. The owner still has the bus & he's on here his addy is Benos

I am owner of said orange bus. Not quite Benos, but near enough :wink:

Yeah - as Nigel has said these are common to Swedish spec buses, but mine were in such a god awful state (and, to be honest, I didn't like the look of them a great deal) I removed them and binned the exterior parts (mostly rust). I have however kept the cavernous washer fluid reservior and electric washer motor.

Not much else to say. Pipe came through front panel into overrider. Fitted directly to spray jet. Overriders attached through same fittings as bumper, just using longer bolts.

My m codes are relatively straightforward other than two - A46 and A90. These might be related to the washer system ... the Eberspacher and heated rear window which also seem to be standard fitment to Swedish buses are detailed in separate M codes (060 and 102 respectively).

Gimme a shout if you want any more info.

77westyberlin wrote:

The windshield washer pump, activates in normal way

The fluid reservoir, replaces kick panel, rear view

Noting that the washer-fluid reservoir, appears to have only the single outlet hose-connection spigot and there are two separate pumps for the windscreen-washer pump and headlamp-washer pump, I imagine there is some kind of reduction T-piece for two large-bore hoses and one small-bore hose, but there is no indication of this in the microfiche.

Your observations and comments please "77westyberlin"!?!

Oh yeah sorry M8, I'm sure Benos posted pics of it, which is why I got confused Hope you didn't mind me using your bus. Hows the baby?

Nigel my Over riders have VWOA stamped on them so I think they were probably manufactured in the USA. I don't think they were ever available in Europe. :D

VWoA suggests that they were probably a USA dealership fitted or supplied accessory.

The 1973 VW 1600 Type 2 has been in my immediate family since January 1975 and it was the first vehicle I ever drove solo, in summer 1975, so having been involved in its maintenance and modification since then, I think I would have become aware of any bumper overriders for these vehicles, had they generally been available in the Great Britain.

I certainly don't recall seeing any 1968~79 VW Type 2s fitted with them, either here or in mainland Europe.

My circa 1984 vintage, J. C. Whitney catalogue, from Chicago, Illinois, USA, shows several variants of aftermarket front & rear bumper overriders, of different heights, for the 1968~72 & 1973 ~79 VW Type 2s.

Vincent Molenaar & Alexander Prinz, "VW Transporter & Microbus: Specification Guide 1967~1979", The Crowood Press, 2005, ISBN 1-86126-765-7.

Using the above titled book, as my sole reference, I determined the following:

For the 1975 model year, A90 collectively represents M102 + M506 + M507

M060 – Eberspacher BA6 petrol heater (left-hand drive) (fitted under cargo floor), Models 211~271, 1974~79

M102 – Rear window heating, Models 21~26, All years

M506 – Brake servo & dual-circuit brake control lamp, All models, 1968~75
M506 – Brake servo, All models, 1976~79

M507 – Ventilation windows in cabin doors, Models 21, 22, 23, 26 & 27, All years

I cannot yet find any reference to an A46, listed under any 1968~79 model year, but there was a D46 for 1970 and a K46 for 1972, but so far as I have been able to determine, these are the only collective codes (i.e. representing a set of two or more M-Codes), which end in 46.

The wiper & washer system, are covered by M288 and M652:

M-288 - Headlamp washer installation: All models, 1974~79

M-652 - Interval switch on windscreen wipers and wash-wipe installation (interval circa 6 seconds): All models, 1973~79.

Barry, any further information which more precisely documents this system would be appreciated; such as:

Part numbers (e.g. Bosch, Hella, Helphos, SWF, VW, etc);
Pictures of components and locations, not previously shown;
Electrical circuit wiring diagrams;
Pump current consumption;
Pump installation positions;
Bodywork hose-grommet positions, etc.

Hmmm ... all good, except mine's a '78 (and has fixed windows all round). No reference to M288 ...

Will get some pics ASAP.

Cheers, Ben

Wow, great thread. I love learning new stuff about busses. I have the VWoA overriders that were a dealer supplied option in the US. Interesting how the Swedish ones with the jets appear to have a similar appearance except for more height. The incorporation of the bolt is a clever alternative to the "claw" that holds on the US spec overrrider, although it would preclude a more medial placement of the pad which is a nicer look IMO.

I have a couple American buddies heading over to Vanfest this year, what would be the chances of finding one of these setups? Or maybe I should look instead in Sweden where they would be coming from anyway.

I have a headlight washer setup for my Vanagon out of a Swedish T3, but have yet to install it. People I know here who have the T3 setup are impressed with the high power jet action of the washer. I wonder how the T2 compares? Thanks for all the pics and fische shots. :)

Another interesting read! I have a spare Vanagon wiper motor, reservoir, wiring and arm that I pulled a few years ago thinking about doing this. I understand that the smaller size of the T2 rear window precludes using that specific setup, better to have a "cross-over-arm, double-linkage, pantograph, rear-window wiper system." The seed is planted. In order to prevent a "hack" on my bus, I will use a donor sage green rear hatch for the project. That is if I even ever end up doing this. In any case the extra hatch would allow me to go back to stock if I am dissatisfied. :D

this thread is great, i picked this van up at the weekend and it's got a broken wiper arm and all the wiring is in a mess

it's also a swedish import

Now that's cool, very unique, welcome.
You really should start it's own thread and tantalize us with lots of pictures.

Headlight washer units generally fitted to Swedish bay Window Buses. I bought this set from Poland - thanks again! Starting to piece it back together for my 76 Panel Bus. This is the dry fit. I had to source a few bits from Home Depot.

With the recent purchase of NOS bolt caps, I bought some longer bolts to hold the overrider on, some washers and a spacer to press against. Here is the dry fit to see how it goes. 8)

Next will be to put the tank in, paint the bumper and fit the special wiper switch.
