So you cant polish a turd huh?

This bus has been looking more and more sorry the longer its sat getting covered in crapy masking tape, well the last few months have been spent prepping priming and painting any bits I deemed ugly. It's been a bit boring.

But here we are.

Rain gutters were ugly and flakey before, cleaned them all out as well as the grubby bits above the windshield.

Bottoms of half the windshields got the same treatment as did the bottom of the cargo door as rear hatch.

before

2000grit

After a handful of different grade buffs, (does'nt raly catch in this light the long panel is always in shade)

Drivers door and wheel 1/2 way through the same treatment.

Nose

So happy with how the Head lights came out.

That's awesome bus and great work! Mine was originally same color… after seeing this I wish it was still like that.

Bendango Tue May 29, 2012 1:05 am

Yep, OG colors are always satisfying, but somehow I'm liking alot of old repaints recently - some can look realy cool.

I read some of your posts before about your adventures, and I'm kind of laughing a bit here as you've posted because I'm trying to finish this bus as soon as possible so I can leave for my travels too, though I wont be taking the bus with me :?

Bendango Tue May 29, 2012 9:23 am

One or 2 more I forgot to put in..

THESE TYRES SUCK - i think they're killing the bus, but they'll have to stay for now.

Man - pushing open my safari for the first time, pretty much put me in fits of giggles!

It is amaising what loosing your job and your girlfriend will do for your VW!!! :D I'm all done with the first stage of this build, shes legal and done 1500miles and now in the UK.

Alot of work done in 40deg heat in S France which included having to camp outdoors for a few weeks as the bus is an hour away from where I live and I lost my company car. Was all good fun though :DDD

Here we go, its been a bit up and down the end of this build but plenty of HI's and a bunch of great photo ops and great days out with friends as soon as it hit the road :DDDD

Enjoy...

Here's where we were, all final parts ordered, engine parts cleaned down and ready to go, I had some ood sized bearings that had to be machined to fit, and lost some time but hey ho....

Brakes on the way to being sorted and crank sanded and cleaned

I made plenty of mistakes, even though I laughed at the warnings about missing out the spacer on the crank that is exactly what I did ( I blame the 30-40 degree direct sun for ALL of my mistakes!) #-o #-o

I busted up on cog and had to start again in the press but eventually got there.

I was happy with this cheap solution, tap just the right sized triangle of metal into the fat circlip and bobs your uncle no need for expencive tools for a one off job :D

Took me too long to get to this point - 2 days I think!!! ](*,) ](*,)

Pretty lucky theres a sweet lake near by - very nice plqce to camp under the stars and fresh water lake to cool down in and wash off :D

Did the ketchup trick - works a treat!!!

But you gotta catch that stuff and clean well or it backfires!!

Engine in and running sweet I thought........

The whole time I'd been rushing to get it done for its controll technique for road worhtyness so I could get back to UK for the Olympics and my God Daughters 1st birthday.

Untill my first rather large mistake became aparent.......I was going to lower it before I went stock using the stock box - somewhere along the line I missed up BIG TIME.

One day away from being finished and totaly knackered and worn out jumped in for a test.

4 reverse gears!!!!!!! I couldnt even get Angry it was that stupid......

Off we go....

All worth it in the end - first test to the local Chinese :D :D :D :D :D :D

First fill up since 1986,,,then the fun starts! :D

First night camping in the front seat by the sea :D

Went for a swim and enjoyed this view because I've just finished working for Toyota....

That's awesome and you're still rockin' the Texas number plate for now.

Your bus is gorgeous!

Bendango Wed Sep 12, 2012 1:53 pm

By this point she wer'nt running to well so I booked in for a tune up.

Even though I'd done nearly 100 miles - I found out I was running on 2 cylinders!!!! DOH!!! ](*,)

(I just thought splitts were a fair bit slower than beetles and maybe she need ed a tune!!!)

Best 20eu Ive ever spent - doubled my HP and got my indicator working for the controll technique!

Getting the miles on before the big trip to UK.

Monaco

Madrid were playing Chelsea for the Champions league final there....

We got mobbed on the Monaco starting grid by Spaniards!

And we even had to play the bull in a Bull fight.

Stopped at Cap D Ail cos they were'nt allowed to serve alcohol until the match started and it started storming. Created some great lighting + check out that Rainbow!

Right - been too lazy to post these up but heres a few nice pics from my drive home. Drive was 1000 miles from Nice france to London via Aix en Prevance - Avignion - Lyon and Paris and it did'nt skip a beat!!

Anyone thats driving a tired engine, rebuild the crap out of it right down to the CORE its just so different when you know it'll start everytime and NOT conk out at traffic lights!!!!! :D

Anyway heres the pics.......

Nice - did a quick photo shot with friends :D

Then left what was my home for the last 7 years - bye bye!

My dads just popped his head round the door when I was posting this and told me my new REG in the UK

Really amazing job on this bus. Its absolutely perfect! I am now a really big fan of the Ceiling Wax Red and I love how you cherried out the chassis and got it mechanically sorted and yet it still has some patina after the buff. It just looks like a trusty bus that you could take anywhere.

Hats off man, great job! =D>
