Ok what is known about magellen's crossover gps? Seems similar to the XOG
http://www.magellangps.com/products/product.asp?segID=391

Anyone have one?

Gonna shrink wrap some boats this weekend so will have some $$ for toys, bat life seams to be the main complaint on the XOG, crossover is reported to be 8 hrs

I have the Magellan 500 Explorist and it has served me well. Put a 1GB SD memory card in it and I can store a whole bunch of data and maps. The PC software is pretty good and it did come with some GEO Caching software which we use quite frequently. It has been tough as it survived a near fatal crash (for me anyway) on my Raptor and it accurately reported the scene of the impact and it still works fine.

Support from Magellan however sucks. They use a call center in India and they are useless. Ordered a 12 volt connector and it took forever to get it to me and no-one over there seemed to be able to give me a straight answer as to when I would get it.

Go with the Magellan Crossover.

I wasn't aware that one of these hybrids existed.
Prior to you posting that link, I was going to post that they DIDN'T exist. One could either get the hiking handheld units with topo display features OR the portable units designed primarily for driving and ease of use.

A year ago when I was doing my research, you could NOT get both in one unit.

Until now, apparently.

Buy it an keep us posted on your findings. It appears to "have it all."

Now, for the record, and to preempt the semantic police, the Crossover would probably be thown into the "portable" category rather than the "handheld" category, based on its SHAPE and as such, wouldn't fit the TITLE of this thread.
My guess is that you probably don't care :)

Put "hands on" an XOG tonite, seams easy to use, just seams kind of frail. And as to hand held, it is about the size of an Altoids tin. After talking to the mgr of a local Gander Mtn, (every day price of $199) of the XOG, he wasnt aware of its capabilities and said he would try one the next time he goes out, they get to field test stuff. Once I get to see the magellen I will let yall know.

I have a Garmin Etrex Vista. I have not spent the time to really get to know it yet though. Anyone have any useful critique of this brand/model? I received it as a gift, so I didn't pay anything for it (the bet kind, i guess!). I don't know how it compares...

Birddog1148,
Another thing to consider is whether both units (XOG vs Mag. Crossover) handle their topos the same way.

The Magellan site says:
"your current position is displayed on the peloaded 90-meter level topographic maps of the 48 contiguous states"

The XOG site says:
"Unique, downloadable maps with U.S. satellite and aerial imagery, enhanced USGS topographic data, and BLM mapping from www.mapselect.com"

It appears as if you get the topos built in (for free) with the Crossover but must download individual topo sections (at a cost maybe?????) with the XOG.

Then again, maybe the XOG topos are better than the "90 meter level" ones in the Crossover. Plus with the XOG you can download satellite and aerial imagery.

Hmmmmm.

COSTCO has the Nuvi 760 on sale for $349.00 until Oct. 29. It has a ton of features. FM adaptor, MP3 player, Bluetooth, etc.

Wallflour Wed Oct 22, 2008 6:20 pm

That one looks great too! They are all going to be competitively priced. Just take your time and get one with the features you really want.

Costco is like "Sam's Club" a bulk wholesale store.

Found this.

I like the ability to download individual map sheets, in Ohio 1/24000 maps from the state USGS maps are $6 ea plus $3 S/H for each order so $5 a map is ok, and Lawrance has been in the Marine industry for years, think my dad has one of their fish finders.

Still need to get a hands on feel for the magellen, gonna be one of those 2 unless something else is brought to my attention.

After reading that review bird dog, I liked the magellan one best. Seems more rugged and bajaish. I've been debating wether or not to buy a GPS unit as well so let me know what you end up choosing and how you like it.

Also, I hear alot of talk about the Garmin Etrex.. seems the off road guys love it.

Will post as developments occur 8)

birddog1148 Sun Nov 09, 2008 7:54 pm

well just bought the Magellan and the traffic kit on E-gay for $45 and $10 respectivly. Will give my impressions once I try it out. deer season is open here so should get to try it soon.

Mikegyver Sun Nov 09, 2008 11:14 pm

woa! nice deal, according to that review its a $250 unit.

Well, I should have posted a bit earlier, sorry. I have the XOG and I love it. It's a great unit for the money. I modified the mount, and bought a different cord so I could tuck in into the windshield gasket and route it down through the heater channel, but it serves my purposes just fine.

...And it has many trails on it that the "High End" ones don't. It even has some that don't exist yet! LOL! Just ask the SoCal guys about some of the dead ends that we've been down! Actually, that was what is commonly referred to as:

USER ERROR

Hope this helps someone out there.....

birddog1148 Mon Nov 10, 2008 6:33 am

well now we will have members that have BOTH and can give 1st hand accounts. The one I got is factory refurbished thats why it was so cheap.
