View original topic: 8 Pin Crank / Stock 4 Pin Flywheel. Help!

So, not realizing one dowel pin is offset, I drove in four pins which do not line up with my flywheel. Now, I can't get the picture pins out! Get an eight pin flywheel? Cut off the four I put in?

That's about as ass backwards as you can get!!

Should have drove the pins in through the flywheel. Should have drilled the flywheel first then drilled the crank to match. Should have bought a flywheel to match the crank. Ect.

Anyway, you can do whatever. You can grind it flush, pull it, or drill the flywheel, or drill the pin. It's all pretty much the same. It is stronger with the pin IN there so your original plan was not the best. The only way you will get a good fit on the pins is drill and ream the crank and flywheel at the same time IMO. I'd pull it and start over. Mig weld a stud to the pin and pull it with a slide hammer.

Seems to me the easiest solution would be to have your Flywheel drilled for the other pins, install all 8 and have a strong setup. Do not try to chop on it, you will eff it up and end up with much bigger problems

Thanks for the kind words, lol. The VW guru who is showing me how to rebuild the motor is running back home to grab an eight dowel lightened flywheel as the solution to this CF. Hopefully it'll match my eight pin SCAT crank.

Thanks. If the soon to arrive lightened flywheel doesn't fit, that's what I'll do. Not sure I even want a lightened flywheel in my stock '67 bus.

having problems with the dowel pins is pretty common. They never do fit perfect. You just went about it differently!

yea I wonder some times about that guy

Let's not mention his name.

Joe.... to late

So... I'm learning quickly. Does the flywheel need to be a 130 tooth 12 volt? Do all 8 dowel flywheels have the SPG pattern I need to match this SCAT crank? Wondering if the flywheel we're gonna try is even right. Might be buying a new flywheel from SCAT on Monday.

To find out if the flywheel lines up, you can set the flywheel on and use a valve, or slice of valve stem, as this is a few thou smaller than the 8mm pins.
If the valve stem won't fit through then the alignment isn't good enough.

calm down, this is a problem that can be fixed with duck tape and a welder

Then I'll have flat tires on top of this mess.

Not from tires! LOL valves as in engine valves!
any self proclaimed VW expert will have a mig welder, and lots of valves. tho he may not have a drill press or reamer to fix holes.

Put something over the hole so you don't get weld spatter in the threads. VERY important!

So... As I await the arrival of the eight pin flywheel ( 1/2 hour away), there are already four pins driven into the crank. If the flywheel fits over those (fingers crossed), do we drive the other four in THROUGH the flywheel, or just into the crank like the other four?

Yep. Gene berg says so.

Finished...up and running. Thanks ya'll. And, he had a stock weight eight pin flywheel...all is good.
