View original topic: 1776 bore size

Earlier this year i cracked one of my heads and I've got a spare set and am growing tired of saving money for a new 2276 and want to drive my bug again.
I checked the reciept for when I had my 1776 built and it says the pistons are 90.5mm. Does that mean I should have the heads bored out to 90.5 or 90.6 or would any random machine shop know exactly.
I had a shop build this motor for me and I've never had to get this kind of work done so i'm clueless here.

Also, any recommendations of price to expect/place to go in the San Diego area are appreciated..

Thanks!

If you take it to a Aircooled VW specialist machine shop he would know what to do for 90.5mm cylinders. 90.5 is the cylinder size.

if i take it to a vw machine shop yes, but at least 6 times out of 10, a vw shop will cost more than a general engine machine shop. Money is tight and I'm trying to do this without using a lot of it..

I understand the budget, but I would drop a little extra on someone who has actually bored a VW engine before. Now is a really bad time for someone to practice on your case.

Take a barrel in with your heads and see what the machinist says. you need some clearance so the head doesn't pinch the barrel when things get
hot. The case spigot hole shouldn't be that loose but people have run heads cut for bigger bores on smaller cylinders with success. Does anyone know the case and head dimensions to cut? A 90.5 mm cylinder's exterior diminsions are 98mm at the top and 96mm bottom.
I'm in Vancouver so I can't recommend anyone.Hope this helps. Al
PS- I'm in the middle of a build with 90.5's so if I get some time later I'll see if I can measure the head and case holes. Stay tuned...........

Got out to the garage; it's a little nippy out there so you better appreciate
this  .
barrel bottom outside diminsion- 3.702"
case barrel hole - 3.718-.720
head hole - 3.828"
barrel top outside - 3.815"

The measurements are accurate to within a couple of thou; my calipers don't have very long fingers but you get the idea. Hope this helps. Al
