In July of 2007 I bought a 62 Double Cab. I just started on it Dec 19th, 08. Here is the story of getting it back on the road. Right now the plan is to do al the nessesary metal work to make it solid and drivable. A full resto will come later. I would like to have it ready for CTS but If it isn't I won't stress over it. My main goal is for the trail bash 09.

I dont know how you do it but you do.....

Forgive my morbid sense of curiosity, but what was nesting on that parcel shelf. I have never seen something rust through like that in an area that you would consider to be dry.

Mice. They nested everywhere. Then the moisture sat in their nest and rotted the metal. This bus is the rustiest I have ever worked on but it is the most complete and original that I have owned. Here are some shots (courtesy of Dave Brooks) of the junkyard it sat in for years.

A little funny story when I was taking out the parcel tray I had power connected to see what components worked and I had all the switch on the dash on. I was reaching into the dash to grab out the nasty nests when I was startled by a buzzing sound. I thought I had grabbed a mouse but it turned out to be the wiper motor turning on. I had touched a wire and the motor kicked in.

Good luck.....it looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you. I wish I had the talent to rebuild a bus like that.

You sure know how to pick em
I take it you're going for an off-road style? That's gonna be sweet 8)

I'd roll it the way it is....Funny thing is that I've seen worst, still on the road.

jeremy, you are for sure a bigger and better man than me! a monumental task at the very least! good luck!

EverettB Fri Jan 02, 2009 11:13 pm

Doublecab Rat Rod, with real Rat
Get a heavy duty sandblaster, it'll pay off in the long run. With that much rust it's too much to trust por-15 or some other temporary solution to keep it subdued. You've got a lot of guts to take a project with that much iron oxide  I hope you're grinding the rust and old paint off around where the new metal is going before welding it in?

I believe Jeremy knows what he is doing and shouldn't have any problems in this area. If you could check out some of his work in person you would feel the same. He has a very keen mechanical mind and understands what he needs to do to get a project done. Whether it's replacing sheet metal or making a forming die for roof rack brackets. I know he will impress us all with how this project progresses and I hope to check it out at CTS this year. :D

Oh, and just to let you know, he hand makes his own front floor sections.

for all the people who complain about their buses not coming with pedal pans, heres a reason to celebrate that fact.

Looking forward to watching another great build Jeremy.
