one common problem is people using generator belts on alternator equipped engines. Gen belts are thinner and slip under the increased load of an alternator (especially with doghouse fan). The BELTS ARE DIFFERENT. |

How can gen belts be differentiated from alt belts? Measurements? part #?
Doghouse fan...yes. Everything else...non stock. OPP DTM shroud on a Type 4 in a Type 181.
How much havoc(temp wise) can a mis-aligned belt cause? Getting the Alt pulley in perfect alignment with the converted crank pulley on a Type 4 is a long known issue. I need to try one of the flipped Alt pulleys to see if I can get it better than it is already. |

A bad battery will also cause the alternator to work too hard and overheat. Check a few things with simple meters- a decent DVOM should show .02-.05ACV measured at the battery with the motor running to verify your diodes are good (and they probably are). If you have a DC amp clamp measure your alternator output at the battery cable near the battery, it should spike to 20-50A upon startup but quickly drop down under 5A after a minute or two running. If it does not it could indicate a shorted battery which will cause alternator overheating and short life. I've seen this numerous times where a bad battery caused the alternator to overheat and die an early death.
Good Luck!
DC amp clamp, $59 list at Sears: (make sure it reads DCA, most are ACA)

alternator belts are wider and transmit more load than gen belts do. Look at the parts catalog, but most idiots behind the counter don't even know this little detail, they assume they all use gen belts. |

The DTM conversion doesn't allow you to run a stock VW belt - which is why Matt was asking how you can tell the difference. The belt part numbers I have are for either a '79 Chevy Nova or a '78 Dodge. I believe those both were alternator vehicles.
No help bitching about parts-counter-staff - the one doing the buying has to be able to tell the difference. |
