Does the 12v square wave output signal from the MSD 6AL tach output work with the VDO 7k tach gauge without any converters?

I would think so,but I'm not certain:they only count pulses.Weather its on/off like a square wave, or plus slope/minus slope like a sine wave shouldn't matter, but that ultimately is maufacturers choice.

I'm getting ready to switch to all MSD too ,6al 8) ,so the tach hooks up to the coil like normal???

i'm using an MSD 6a and i had to purchase their MSD tach adaptor,to be able to use my vdo tach,it plugs into the MSD unit then, you hook your tach lead to it....

No... Tach hooks to "tach output" terminal on AL6 box and/or through adapter...

I stand corrected...It's been a while since i've had to deal with it, I burnt out the first one,but have had no probs since..This MSD unit works well with the Blaster 2 coil, in conjunction with a MalloryUnilite fitted with an Ignitor mod....
