Don't worry too much about the having the longer bumper on the gate. Use the shorter bumper on the rear of the side gates and the longer ones behind the rear wheel. It will work with this setup. They designed it so the gate clears the rear wheel well. Especially on the syncro 16" that has the added fender flares. On mine it clears with or without the longer bumpers on the rear side gates.
I do have the longer bumpers on the gates and the body. I tried it with the shorter bumpers on the gates and it still clears.

Thanks Tony.
I will be using what I have for the rear of the gates.
I do have another question for the group, and this is about the drop gate step for the tailboard. In replacing my rear gate I got the following factory drilled holes:
However this does not match up with my step holes; the VAGCAT shows no other step available. Does anyone know what these pre-drilled holes are for if not my step?
Our options at this point are to either weld and redrill and paint or to build a custom plate to mount. The later was my body shop suggestion, I am opting for the re-drill. But I am still confused as to why these holes are even there. |

Hey Bman it looks like you have the short step version. They had at least steps for these trucks. The one I have looks like the one you need to match up with the holes.

Sorry, but how many different steps did they make? I will need to revisit the shop to measure the width of mine. Another piece of info is that my step is OEM from a German Army truck; for this repair I chose to go with a civilian tail gate. Clearly they have some different styles.
Do you (or anyone else) have any source for steps as well? |

I don't have an extra wider step. And I only know of two sizes used for these trucks. I'm sure someone here might have one if not check with other forums. These steps were used on 2wd and single cabs as well not just syncros.
I would wait to see if you can get a hold of a wider step before you weld up the holes.

You are looking at the difference between a 2wd and syncro version step. The syncro step has a A suffix part number while a 2wd does not. |

So if the step (245 829 345 A) is for a syncro and without an A is for a 2WD, why would they not make this distinction in the tailboard as well? My thought is that the shorter one that I have may have been stock for the 247 prefix "tailboard with openings for tail lights."
Just one more, on top of many, expense towards driving my truck again. |

Fill, redrill and paint- you already have a step.
You have a 2wd anyways. |

Send me your gate and I will send you mine with the holes in the right spots . While mine is not as nice as yours ,you will no have to weld paint and re drill .
Looks like the "devil in the details " are rearing their ugly head . I am enjoying the progress on your truck and wish a tree fell on mine .

Hey Articulation, Welcome and the DoKa looks good. I see surface rust as usual. Do you plan on restoring it? Tell us about the engine, interior and where you got it.
What year and does it have diff locks?
It looks loke a 1987.
More pictures of the interior and engine compartment.

Hey thanks! It's an '86, rear diff lock, 2.1 at the moment. I got it from my buddy Rob but he kept the aaz that was in it. So I got a gas motor with the Doka, went thought it and using that for now. I like the 2.1 but I need more. The aaz that was in it became available again so I have that going back in soon. Long term I would like to take it all down for a full restore but until I have a better shop at home I'm enjoying it and going through the drivetrain. I'll keep it out of the road salt though. I just found all the skid plates for it down in NM. They were all missing.

That 2.1L looks like new. I wonder why he replaced the AAZ with a gasser? It must have come with a 1.6TD originally then. If you need carrier bars I have them for sale. It looks like you have a lot of the parts still from the conversion.
I just put an AZZ in my truck and it works well. If he kept the wiring harness it will be a snap to put the AAZ back in. Don't forget that the input shaft on the transmission needs to be changed if you go with a AAZ. Unless there is another trick to make this work. I believe the shaft is shorter. Flywheel and clutch are different as well. If it came with an AAZ in the past, you would still have the bell housing.

Tony, I'm sure ill be needing something for the swap back to the aaz. I'll be asking. From what I was told he had used an adapter plate between the engine and transmission. I remember seeing it installed a long time ago and remember it sitting more straight up and down instead of leaning left like usual. I could be imagining things though. I'll get some pics up as soon as I pick it up.
Originally it was a gasser in Canada and it was converted to TD at some point from what I was told. When I bought it from my buddy Rob he kept the aaz to put in a syncro camper he got. So I just took the gas motor from that. But like I said that aaz is going back in again. :D Russ |

Wow what an awesome color! I have always liked the red dokas. This one looks like it's in great shape. This is the first syncro 16 I have seen in red. Very low miles as well. Congrats on the purchase.
Tell us more about it. Interior pictures would be really good. Diff locks?
That canopy is awesome as well. What is a doka like that selling for in your area?

So it was sitting at 15deg. And the adapter plate would allow for the longer gasser input shaft to be used I believe. On this site and others you should be able to find everything you will need to install the AAZ.
Originally the 1.6td sits at 50deg.
Post up the pictures of the AAZ when you can and make a list of the parts you will need.

Hi there,
Thanks for the compliments.
No, there are not that many 4 doors 16" and there are not that many 16" for sale anymore in Sweden.
Besides the usual Swedish options it does not have any extra options , that means also no power steering!
As i will be driving about 2-3000km every year the mileage will stay low for a while. :)
Plans are :
Big mirrors
Power steering
Tristar Interior
I will try to make some interior pics this weekend!
Regards
