Picked this up last weekend. I am the third owner. It was in the last family since 1963. About 95% complete. Original motor and tranny. Supposedly the motor was rebuilt in '78 and never started! That same year it was ripped apart for a resto, and never touched again for 31 years until I pulled it home. Does have some rust, but this is Ohio! Was bought brand new right here in Lima, OH. Floor pans have already been cut out...back in '78! Original color was Coral Red...was resprayed (poorly) this god awful greenish yellow in the early 70's. The old guy I bought it from told me he drove it to Alaska and back twice in the late 60's-early 70's. Pulling the body back off this weekend. Then the fun starts...motor, front end, tranny, wiring, etc.... Hope to have it on the road by next summer. Here are some pics.

Looks can be deceiving! She does have some rust I'll have to deal with, but it's an oval! Certainly worth the effort!

Wow! Wish I knew about it!

I never see anything but fat chicks around here....and most of them are in worse shape than that!

Congrats!

Very cool. Those "as found" pics remind me of my own way back when (thebugshop.org). Good luck, ovals are great drivers. Keep us posted...

How much did you pay for it??

myk648 Thu Jul 30, 2009 12:13 pm

I got it for a fair price. It came with the og motor, another 36hp motor from a 58..in pieces...another complete front beam with steering box, 2 spare rear fenders, extra set of bumpers, 12 hubcaps, and a bunch of other stuff. It took 2 full truck loads to get the loose stuff home, and 1 more to get the body and pan back. Oh, and the best thing it came with is a title!! It was the title from 1963 when the guy I bought it form purchased it as a used car from the local dealership. I was told it was a trade in towards the purchase of a new(1963) beetle. I tried to get the lady at the title dept. to let me keep it, but no dice. She did give me photocopies of it though.

Well that explains why it has that extended steering shaft so you have sit way back in the package tray to drive it! Other wise, you would fall out the bottom.

Looks great! What are your plans for it? Keep us updated!

Nice hope you are fully restoring it.

For the time being, I plan on making it 100% drivable. I'm going to go through the motor, tranny, brakes, electrical, suspension, etc. Not too concerned about the body work just yet. Needs floor pans and driver's side heater channel, but other than that, not too bad. Tried stripping off some of the yellow paint today to see what shape the og paint is in. I had to buy the 1 car that was resprayed the right way! Will post some pics when I get a chance.

Nice find on that 57 looks like a fun project There must be somthig about Lima and vw's I just picked up a 63 ragtop project a few weeks ago at Beards buggy shop's show wish I had known about the 57 I'd have bought it instead then I would have a maching pair

myk648 Sat Aug 01, 2009 12:48 pm

I've known about this oval for some time now. Just had to get my ducks in a row before I picked it up. Praying no one else would find it!! I was at the Beard's buggy show...driving a Java Green 71 Super Beetle with a set of Porsche wheels for sale in front of it...the "sacrificial lamb" if you will, that allowed me to get the oval.
