back on the ground 8)
The beam's adjusted all the way down. Not exactly "slammed", but low enough to be low and still be drivable. |

We pulled the engine and tranny yesterday, along with the auto-stick accoutrement.
Just look at that clean luggage tray!
(surface rust)
Looks like a lifetime of greasy gunk built up from the leaky autostick helped to protect the metal from rust :D |

Well, I spent most of last weekend digging a few parts engines out of a junkyard. Also took a trip over to keene to pick up a transmission.
No pics of "before", but here's the tranny after we cleaned and painted it:
Painted with por sterling silver (just what we had laying around).
The starter is from an old Porsche auto-stick, pretty much the same thing as the vw auto-stick starter.
We got a few vital parts off those parts motors, so we were able to get the engine together for the most part.
also got the master cylinder hooked up and put in all the new brake lines.
My dad started work to get the clutch tube in today. He cut open a small access panel:
Here's what we're using for the tube:
3/8ths inside diameter copper tube from home depot. the size is perfect.
Need to get some JB weld to hold it in place
^^POR rocks^^^
also need to lengthen the shift rod before we can even think of putting the transaxle in.

Looks like it's coming along nicely.
I didn't see where you had any mention of drop spindles (I may have missed it), are you using them? I ask because that thing sits way up high to be "all the way down". It doesn't really look lowered much to me. Could just be the pic's angle.
I like what you're doing regardless! |

Thanks
Not running drop spindles currently... maybe some time in the future. that would tuck the wheel in the fender quite nicely... then again I probably couldn't make it very far into the state of Massachusetts before I got stuck in a pothole  .
The beam is adjusted "all the way down". The pics don't really do it justice though, hard to get a good angle in the garage... trust me though, it's lowered (though not "slammed"); I couldn't even get the floorjack under the car from the front the other day, had to come in from the side. |

Must just be the angle of the shot then. |

are you sure the factory colour was blue cos that sure looks like some OEM white patina under the parcel tray which never gets repainted and on the firewall where the tarboard padding was glued on |

shoot... forgot to correct myself on that one
the previous owner told us the car was originally blue... which seemed probable from the blue paint showing through some chips in the white. Once we tore into the car further we realized the car actually had come from the factory white. After that, someone gave it a poor quality blue paint job, leaving everything but the exterior white. When someone decided to bring the car back to it's original white, they just went over the blue. |

got some good progress over the weekend. We got the engine compartment cleaned up and painted:
Before:
After:
If it looks like the paint in the engine compartment seems like a brighter white... that's because it is. The whole car needs a paint job down the line, so I've decided to go with a whiter-white. Well, that and my dad picked up the wrong shade of white, so I figured I'd just go with it  .
we also took the rear suspension all apart, gave everything a coat of POR-15, and re installed it after turning the spring plates one inner spline. Those trailing arms were a bitch to put back in btw... almost had a major meltdown on the status of the project... but my dad manged to finagle them in.
STILL NO REAR DRUMS... can't seem to find a place that stocks 4x100 drums except cip1, which is out of stock and they say they don't plan to have them in stock for another 2 months at least.
+ We don't really want to pay some goon with a drill press $150 to install studs in blank drums. any one know a place that stocks 'em?

You're probably going to have to raise the rear a bit when you reinstall the engine. Looks good, though. |

I got a pair of headlights on ebay for $30 shipped last week, bulbs included
Before & after
More dash guages in the mail, and my father installed/ wired them today:
Got a ceramic coated tri-mil 2 tip exhaust for the engine
Once we get the engine compartment seals in the mail tomorrow, the engine can go in some time soon :D
That's all for now |
