Well, I haven't been on TS recently because my computer's been crapping out lately. First a barrage of viruses, then my fan crapped out... any-who, I've been out of a computer for the past week.

Major update on the bug though... Got the engine in last weekend!!

I just realized I never posted any specs of it in this thread, so here it goes:

-1776cc
-90.5 mahle pistons
-big valve heads
-scat C25 cam (mild, kind of like engle 110 ?)
-Dual Weber ICT carburetors

It's been a while since we built it, so I'm not sure if I'm missing anything :/

We're going to attempt to start it tomorrow... we were going to try it today but we discovered that the metal fuel line that goes through the tunnel was shot, so were going to have to replace that. I'll try to get a video of it running for ya tomorrow

Looking good so far! FYI, a C25 is more like an engle 100 cam than a 110. Should give a nice performance boost over stock though! That red pin striping picks up on the red of the calipers as well.

yeah, figured It was probably more like the 100, it's been a while since I looked into it :)
I'm hoping the engine won't give us any grief this time around. When we had it in the bus there were some compression issues, but I think we have those all squared away (even though we never figured out what we did wrong).

I guess the pinstripes are a hit, lol. After painting the calipers red, the red/white theme has followed suit. I guess I'll have to go with it so the bug will match my bus  .

Reading this is killing me. My dad and I have been working on our 1950 Willys instead of our 63 bug. First of the year we plan to begin the bug. What size tires are you running?

zombie Thu Dec 17, 2009 10:44 pm

I don't know what you have planned for the fuel gauge but one of these would be pretty cool.

Pricey, though.

The tires are 205/40 - 17 on 17x7" rims
post some pictures of that rag when you get working on it 8)

That tach is seriously cool!

Update time I suppose...
We swapped out the carbs in favor of dual weber 40 IDFs

(don't get your nuts in a bunch over the placement of the fuel filter and missing tin, it's temporary  )

We've spent the last month trying to diagnose the problem we're having with the engine. It doesn't fire on cylinder #3 at idle. The only reason this is so completely baffling is we've covered all our bases over and over. This is the same engine we built for my bus a few years ago, it had the same problem then, and we couldn't figure it out. We tore it down and rebuilt it, finding nothing out of place.
Compression check confirmed 150 lbs at every cylinder. We thought it may have been a fuel issue at the carb, but we swapped them to no effect. We checked the spark at the plug, and it's bright and strong.

My dad thought our camshaft was maybe too radical, not allowing the valves sufficient time to close, so today he loosened the valves on the 3 & 4 side for a little test. This then caused both 3 & 4 cylinders to stop firing. He then adjusted the valves again, this time a little on the tight side... that caused the engine to run better than it ever has, but still not quite right.
We're just about ready to throw in the towel on this god forsaken engine.

on the good side of things...
The first test drive proved our transmission swap was a complete success

(camera phone pic)

Notice the lack of sweet rear wheels... still no 4x100 drums in stock. cip tells me maybe some time in February.

It's been a while...
I'm quite pleased to say that we got the engine running better than ever thanks to an all new ignition system... just hope it lasts
Nothing much else besides engine work has been going on... It's been too damn cold! Though I did manage to convert my pass side high back seat to a lowback, in the comfort of my own room.

I just need to do the other one and get some '65-'67 seat covers to re-cover 'em. I was thinking about going with TMI's new "sport seats", though I can't seem to find any pics of them installed.

Also, CIP1 just got some 4x100 drums in stock today, so I already have them on order. Finally! So we should be able to get the drums + rims on by the end of the month.

I almost forgot... I got my vanity plates from the state last week, and put 'em on the bug the other day.

I was pretty pumped... I got the last good variation of V DUB :D
Live free or die!

With an hour of receiving the parts in the mail, my dad and I had the drums and wheels on the bug this morning :D

Vwrascal Fri Feb 19, 2010 1:45 pm

Very nice! Wheels, pinstripe and red calipers look sweet together. 8)

zombie Fri Feb 19, 2010 3:46 pm

at first I was a bit skeptical about those wheels but now that they're on the car they look really good. Are you going any lower with it?

Lord Helmet Fri Feb 19, 2010 4:34 pm

Looks real nice! I'd slam the nose more. 8)

4Doora Fri Feb 19, 2010 5:38 pm

thanks for the feedback :D
We don't have any immediate plans on going any lower. If I did, I'd bring the nose down a touch, in order to tuck the front wheels in a bit more, but I'd need drop spindles to do it.
I kind of like having suspension though, It will come in handy when I need to drive on the roads of Massachusetts.
The next priority will be to either tighten up or replace the steering box because right now the steering is about as vague as a... vague thing.

throw some euro blades on that thing and call it done, looks great!

thanks!
I think I'm eventually gonna go with some mexi bumpers though :o

OTO X58 Mon Feb 22, 2010 1:42 pm

Nice work, it's looking good! I love the wheels, and all the colors working together. I agree that the front needs to come down just a bit. but it looks good this way until you get a pair of spindles.

Good idea. A Kamei front spoiler would finish it off nicely, too!

my two cents, definitely get a set of drop spindles. It'll give your car a perfect stance with those wheels.
