there is a little circular plug on the back of the case directly behind the flywheel that's about the size of a quarter. my "how to rebuild your aircooled engine" book states that if you have an autostick transmission that this plug must be facing inward toward the cam, but if you have a manual it needs to be facing outward away from the cam. whats the difference?
i am in the process of converting my autostick to a manual, so do i have to crack the case open to turn this little plug around? if you need pics let me know, im pulling my autostick tranny off later tonight so i will try to get some pics then if necessary. |

I think it was a flexplate interference thing. |

No you don't need to. Like Miniman82 posted. It's the other way around. An autostick flex plate can rub a hole in the cam plug if it's in the "manual trans/normal" flywheel type configuration. You will not have any issues. |

IIRC, you should be able to install it one direction that will work on either a manual or Auto Stick application?

Yes... with the plug in it will work with both.
So you can convert a autostick to a manual but not a manual to a autostick. |

but not a manual to a autostick.
unless you tear down the case and turn the cam plug around. |
