I own a bone stock 1600 dp and am considering running dual carbs

I currently have a single 34 pict 3 with the dvda dist.

Can i run dual 34 pict 3

will there still be a way to run my dvda?

perrib Mon Dec 28, 2009 8:24 pm

Yes.

jared8783 Mon Dec 28, 2009 8:55 pm

where is a good place to purchase a pair of intakes and a single 34 pict 3, as well as the proper throttle linkage?

is this a pretty straight forward installation?
I have taken EVERYTHING off the top of the engine a few times now, i should be able to handle this right?

will this be complicated?re-jetting?venturis?
can anyone refer me to a good tech article

I have never seen dual 34PICT-3s done successfully.

There are no commercially available manifolds, for that reason.

jared8783 Mon Dec 28, 2009 9:29 pm

oic
thanks glenn

so then what is a good single barrel dual carb setup?

will it be possible to still use my dvda?
if not then what dist. to get?

i am just looking to do ONLY a mild dual carb setup and a basic stret header with a hideaway muffler for some "passing power"

thanks

baby weber icts or take a risk on the empi ict clones.

ScrapJunkie Mon Dec 28, 2009 10:49 pm

I loved my Kadrons. Otherwise go baby Webers or baby Dells.

Personally I have had a great success with the baby 34 weber 1bbl carb set up and a 009 dizzy...I have had this set-up on 2 different vehicles...one single port and another was a dual port...and both set ups I noticed a small difference in power but a huge difference in responce...the only dissadvantage is they have no choke so you have to be patient in cold weather...you get used to it though...you do have to remember that what you are wanting to do can be complicated...rules to remember to convert to dual carbs.

1: Do all your home work and make sure you can fine tune them and you have the tools...all you really need is a sync tool and know how to adjust 2 carbs to act as one.

2: It is extremely important that your motor be in top condition...no bad valves, properly adjusted valves and a compression test with results within 10% from highest to lowest number...this means that if your highest compression is 110psi and your lowest reads 100psi I personally would not do the set up until the problem is fixed....this is ONLY my personal guid lines, but others might say otherwise.

I'm not trying to scare you from doing the mod cuz it will be rewarding very much!...many people make the mistake to purchase the dual carbs, basically diving in an empty pool before doing their homework...then get frustrated cuz they have no ideal on what to do or why they don't work...then end up taking it to a VW shop and spending a weeks salery paying the shop to do something that you could have done yourself...I have the same set I mentioned above that a friend purchased and had on his car for only 2 hrs...he called me up and told me that the carbs were junk...so I offered a trade for a single progressive carb and got a nice new set for next to nothing...the point here is I don't want you to invest your hard earned money into these carbs until you feel confident that you can dial them in yourself...the most you may gain in HP is maybe 10% but the responce is way improved over the factory single set-up...if you do a search on Samba you will find a lot of knowledge on how to dial in a dual carb set-up.

I wish you luck on your search and again...do as much research as you can to learn the process...once you learn the process, it is very easy and as long as you keep the engine in tune you should not have to fiddle with the carb adjustments on a regular basis...remenber; oil change, points adjustment or convert to electronic, check your fuel lines, fix your oil leaks, check the lower head bolts and enjoy.

That was a good read krusher...thanks!

jared, the stock 34 PICT 3 does not lend itself for dual carb application in a Beetle. Just look at the engine in your car. If you take the carb, move it to the left or right of the fan shroud, it does not have enough room between the shroud and the side engine compartment panel. The float bowl is large, rectangular and off to one side. It would have to sit so high that you'd hardly have room for an air cleaner, and the long intake manifold would not heat up too quickly for smooth running when cold.

You probably could make up a pair of manifolds to make two of these carbs work on either a Ghia or a Bus because those models have way more room to the side of the shroud. However, you would need to adapt either some steel Kadron carb manifolds, since the bolt pattern at the bottom of the 34 PICT 3 is smaller than that for the Kads. And you would need to do good welding and measuring to get all to fit.

There are other carbs much better suited for you. I'd suggest Kadrons. I've used them mostly with the 009 distrib. (buy a good one from aircooled.net). If you buy the Kadron linkage and it is new, then you're OK. If you buy a used set of carbs and linkage, make sure the ball socket ends of the linkage are new, or else they can pop off during hard acceleration. Other new carbs are aircooled.net's 34 or 35 Solexes; or the Webger 34 ICTs. Out of those 3 choices I only have utilized the Kads on both a totally stock 1600 as well as mild 1776s, and can recommend them.

i saw the solex's on aircooled.net
and like them

thats a more "stock" type setup than weber or kardon right?

that is what i would be looking for

as mild as can be

IS it still possible to run a dvda or svda dist with dual carbs?
if not whats a good dist. to run on this engine with dual solex'x single barrel

NOT WILLING TO GET 009

If your interested in the dual Solex's from aircooled.net then you should also ask them about their SVDA. They can sell you a package deal with the dist. set up correctly for those carbs.

It depends on what you consider "stock." The dual Solex 35 PDSITs are a more modern and slightly larger version of the dual 32 PDSITs that were stock on Type 3s and the dual 34 PDSITs that were stock on 72-74 Type IV engined buses. I believe Kadrons (Solex 40 EIS) were available stock on some Brazilian VWs, including the VW Type I powered Puma sports car. I'm not sure if Weber 34 ICTs came stock on anything, but they aren't exactly going to knock your socks off. If I were you I'd run a pair of Dellorto 36 DRLAs. They have vacuum ports for vacuum advance distributors and came stock on Alfasuds if that matters to you. :)

I am currently running a dvda
can that still be used?
will it hook up to only one carb or both of them?

onesweet63 Tue Sep 28, 2010 1:41 am

where can i get a linkage set for my baby webers. the guy i bought them off of said that they are for a puma. i just need a web site so i can get a rebuilt kits and a linkage kit for my 63 bug

flatfour Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:51 am

www.cbperformance.com sells linkage/aircleaner kits.

Almost Alive Tue Sep 28, 2010 2:48 pm

Stay away from ICT clones. I ran a set for about 4 months. The carb bodies are made of such a soft material that the linkage mount screws pulled through from normal driving vibrations. Not only that but after 4 months they were trashed. They are easily rebuildable but not worth it.

GDOG57 Wed Sep 29, 2010 1:21 am

^ Agreed^ The newer pdsit's are crap too. Find some old ones to rebuild.

madmike Wed Sep 29, 2010 5:46 am

Quit fucking around and get some real carbs ,40 IDF's 8) Single barrels belong on Buses
