I am blasting and painting all the tin going onto my engine before assembly.

How do I take this apart? I really don't want to break or damage that round plastic cap looking thing.

Pull the plastic cap off then remove the screen/mesh then send me your address I will loan you the tool that you will need to unscrew the top from the stand. PM me

Wow, thanks Don!

Does the cap come straight off or does it need to turn? I tried prying lightly with a screw-driver, but I didn't want to break the cap.

I'd actually like to know the answer to this too cuz I'm almost at that point in my rebuild too.

I have a 1" pipe easy out that I use to get them apart.
Putting them back together is another thing.

Max Welton Fri Feb 26, 2010 7:42 pm

Ok, a little prying with a small screwdriver and the cap came up.

You still have a center sleeve to take out.

And the tool to remove that was sent today. Should be there Monday I hope.

That sleeve is in there pretty good. Needle-nose pliers aren't moving it.

Internal pipe wrench is all I use.

I am sniping an internal pipe wrench right now.
Seems everyone that has them for sale wants to sell a full set, and they want big bucks.
Sears gets like $23 for a single 1", and then another $9 shipping. My local Sears store does not sell them.

I've seen them in the plumbing section at a local Loews, didn't check the price. Probably available at Ace or Home depot as well.

Looking for Spring weather!

Crap, I didn't realize they were that much.

I bought one from another VW guy at a swap meet for $1.

I will give you $5 and pay the shipping.

That is a better return than you get at a bank.

OK, is there some trick to getting that sleeve out? I can get on it with needle-nose pliers, but it ain't a-movin'.

Same type of snap ring pliers that you take the snap ring off the crankshaft.
Duckbills are what some people call them.
