Cool site!

Yes... they seem to be filling the need for quality engine tin parts.

Yeah just mail in your J pipes.

Thanks for the link Glenn, never was sure how they fitted. Now that I've seen a photo, OOOH  , I'll make my own template and make some out of stainless steel.

I forgot about that.

Also the left and right are different.

AlteWagen Sat Feb 27, 2010 1:08 pm

Is the diagram a left or right?

probably a stupid question.....but is it possible to install the "sled" tins with the headers/jpipes already installed???

Glenn Sat Feb 27, 2010 1:41 pm

It's hard to get the forward M6 screws but it is possible.

Then don't buy one that doesn't fit. If people stop buying crap, they'll change the design.

Don't be offhand and ridculous Glenn. You and I both know that finding a proper exhaust is next to impossible so telling me not to buy crap (which you hopefully know I don't) is a flip answer that helps nobody and is illogical.

Even the best systems like my A-1 present problems so the key to this (and many other posts) is to find ways to adapt and overcome parts that were not designed properly. And it also isn't neccessary to tell people for the millionth time to "buy a Berg" as that is also a non solution. Just as assuming if people stop buying junk that someone will start making proper parts. That isn't happening and isn't likely to start soon.

Not sure why you answered me like that but please don't do that again.

How about asking the vendor to actually make something that fits. Its the "that's all they make" attitude that keeps EMPI in business.

It's this that dooms you and others.

VW owners have no one to blame for the state of the aftermarket them themselves.

I choose not to be a "victim". Yes it costs more and it means I sometimes have to wait for parts, but to me its worth it in the long run.

I've made many mistakes in my 40 years of working on VWs, but i've learned "You may not get what you pay for, but you always pay for what you get"

henrym Sat Feb 27, 2010 6:25 pm

I agree with everything you say Glenn, trust me. And as you know, I cut absolutely no corners or cost on my project. But sometimes there are no alternatives and not many people in here will disagree with that. There are also a huge mass of people in this niche hobby who have neither the money, time nor other resources that you and I have to source what we want. We need to be cognizant of this and provide advice and support that reflects this reality. Just telling them to “go out and buy only top quality and shun GEX” will only isolate people and portray this fine website and its contributors as being elitist and exclusionary.

Like you, I've been in this hobby since its heyday; when there was a huge demand that kept quality companies like Bergs plenty busy. There were also VW's still clogging the lanes of I-5 and the L.I.E. Today, it’s rare to see one on the road so hand in hand with this, demand simply drops. I am just pleased for people like A-1, John at Aircooled and the others who try to at least throw some quality back in this business.

Template should be left and right, just need to switch which way you bend them.

I know they are not; but, these tins look ALOT like the lower tins from a Type 3. Only the Type 3 doesnt have the access panel for the thermostat. My question is, Will the Type 126 Tins work with Type 3 Lower Cooling Tins? Or will your tin set up work as the Lower Cooling Tins for a Type 3?

Glenn - Thanks for the 2 links provided. I just happened across this thread, and I have recently installed an A1 exhaust. I wasn't sure what to do about those pieces. This was very helpful. I plan on calling Berg on Monday.

You drive a 2008 Lexus, I drive a 2001 Civic. I don't expect my car to perform like your car. Same with aftermarket parts, you can't expect JC Whitney parts to perform like Jake Raby parts. when you use cheaper parts you have to expect poor fit and finish and lesser performance.

It's just a fact of life.

I just hate that companies like EMPI and GEX are still out there. I always try to support the companies and vendors that support our hobby, even if it costs me a bit more. It's the "i'll buy the cheapest" mentality that sucks in the newbies and poisons them to the hobby.

It's companies like Awesome Power Coating that has stepped up and filled a needed void. While it might be preferred to have a header that fits in the stock location at least now you can still close off the opening with their tins.

I made these today.. before reading this post.. I suppose I could make these from a heavier gauge steel, preferably stainless and they'd be 'protectors.. But, I guess after reading they don't much deliver the air from the fan like the stock design. but, I've never had any overheating problems, and I figure at best I've eliminated some of the radiant heat from the exhaust.. They'll work for me I guess just fine!

Simple, hand formed (no metal-brake, just using the top of my toolbox, and a drawer to get as straight a bend as possible after scribing lines.. .025" aluminum sheet bought for $12.99 at Ace, and 4 SS hose clamps.. WaaLaaah!

The initial idea for these came from seeing HenryM's shields he fabbed for his A-1 Exhaust..

So these industrial tins mount to the sleds but nowhere by the head? I watched the install video on the Awesome Powder Coating website and it looks like they just hang there.

Is this how they all are? Is it how the 126 tins are on Glenn's? I can't really tell.

wompninja Sat Dec 04, 2010 2:44 pm

They just sit behind the lip on the head.
