sleds are used even with factory heater boxes. they are what protect your push rod tubes. and it would be easier to install with the motor out since they bolt to the backside of the cylinder head tin. the tin that this thread is about is something different than just a sled and can be installed without removing the motor.

They do more than protect the pushrod tubes, they direct the air so it can join the airstream under the car while it is in motion. The faster the car is going, the harder it is for the expelled cooling air to join the airstream with out the sled tins and either heaterboxes or industrial tins. This layer of air under the car can be as much as 2psi higher than the air trying to exit the lower cylinder shroud area. This is why a car without the sled tins and heaterboxes or industrial tins will seem to cool okay around town but overheat at highway speeds.

also, if you are running the thermostat with J pipes, you MUST run all the lower tins, heater box sleds, 2 /4 lower rear air deflectors and industrial shields, or else the stat will see cooler air from below the engine and not open enough, or may not open at all = overheated engine. I've been making and selling them for years.

I`m restoring and tuning type 4 2,0 wich have exchaust ports down of the heads.I plan to not use heater boxes.Are exist tins for this engine for J-tube use ?

Our 71 super is only go'n to be a weekendend ride & Texas has rather mild winters.

What pieces do I need to change to go with the Jtubes & Ind tins? Heard I need to change/modify the doghouse. The motor is still out while we did some body repairs.

The industrial tins just fill the hole left when the heater box is removed. They are held in place with two screws where the heater box attached to the sled tin. No modification to the doghouse is required.

I recently made up my own lower tins as I am running an old school S&S Header and it runs even closed to the push rod tubes and more inboard than most. So using the stock sleds and tins wasnt realy an option without a lot of cutting.

Could you run these with the heaterboxes? would it make any difference?

these replace the heater-boxes, so if you have heater-boxes you don't need/can't run these

these fill the void that a heater-box would fill normally

I made mine from some cheap roofing flash material. It's easy to cut and bend to whatever shape you need.

Flashing

Trim it down

Find a way to bend it...

Trim it and bend to fit.

I use a small one inch by two inch piece of the waste and make a 90 degree bend in the middle and drill a hole to use it as a stop to hold the bend.

Trim the length to fit....
Test mount and drill the holes to mount the existing tin and you have sleds for about $4.00 in parts and a half hour or so labor.

Altewagon, this thread rocks! I have recently been thinking of fabricating some myself, and your plans are perfect. It gets pretty hot here in California, and I would love to do everything I can to ensure that my motor stays nice and cool. Thank you! 8)

Better late than never?
Finally got round to fabbing some up.
First attempt helped me realize that to accommodate the AJsims headers I ran, I had to cut the sleds.
Round two fit better. Plus, I have a set ready for stock sleds, if/when I get round to that.
Not pretty, but, should do the trick.

here's my contribution to j-tube heater box delete cooling tin goodness, this is for a 1969 type 3.

made in 1mm alu. drilled/tapped the 2 round protrusions on the heads. it's almost as if they were made specifically for this purpose.

been running a little hot without these, hope they help.

a nice bit of alu is hard to beat though. and there's also the satisfaction of doing something yourself, when you can.
