As the self-appointed Grand Poobah Most Exalted Wielder of Excelsior and Final Arbiter of all Things Pedantic and Petty, I will now unveil my ruling for the ages:
It is henceforth and forever to be called THE REAR MAIN SEAL BY THE SEA.
That is all. |

Thank you Zeitgeist, glad we got that out of the way. And yes Wildthings, I am with you, pulley side is Front, drive side is Rear.
So - any new ideas on parts and labor? Is it silly to buy a refurb flex plate? |

I'll also accept FRANKFURTER AM MAIN as an alternative spelling |

dougass- if it were my money and the flex plate showing NO signs of cracking, i'd put a Speedi Sleeve on the seal surface of the flex plate. they works great, are easy to install, and fairly inexpensive.
thank you Zeitgeit 13, for your wisdom on the nomenclature. another needless Conflict of No Importance avoided. and i'm ashamed i threw the rock.

This sounds like a good option. Is there a known part number for the flexplate Speedi Sleeve? Looking at SKF’s website they have the vanagon in there but no listing for the flexplate... |

It should be the same as the flywheel, otherwise take the flex plate in to your local autoparts and let them mike it. |

Hi y'all - new Vanagon owner here. I have a '91 with an automatic tran that has a leak at the rear main seal, so that's how I came across this thread (and the forum in general, really). So I'm the process of removing the transmission, but can anyone point me to a good step-by-step on how to do this? I've working on my vehicles before but nothing this extensive, so I would to have a little walkthrough. Order from GoWesty should be here on Monday, and it includes the seal and the Bentley manual, but ya know....having a little extra guidance (hopefully with photos?) would be great! |

While you wait for the GW order, pick up a Hanes manual, too. The Bentley is the best source for technical info, but it can be a little short on info when it comes to step by step instructions. The tranny procedure might be ok, but, generally, it doesn't exactly hold your hand. Good Luck!

Thanks for the tip. Does the Bentley and/or Hanes have pretty decent schematics, like an exploded view or something like that? |
