View original topic: Bugspray/Zenith manifold questions?
Almost Alive Mon Jul 12, 2010 12:33 pm

I've noticed a few different versions of these manifolds but never really any explanation about them.
First off, Any Bugspray will fit a Zenith maifold and vice versa correct?

Second, I've seen some manifolds where the base is angled to the side, I'd imagine this is for use with an alternator as the ones that sit straight are for generators?

Third and lastly, Race Trim and another company which the name seems to slip my mind have made great looking manifolds for them. Can these be used with either an alt or gen?
Thanks!

No one?

Bugspray and 32NDIX do use a slightly different bolt pattern IIRC. The offset distance from the fan shroud is also different, and NDIX runs better with a plenum manifold and BS runs better with an isolated runner. I have both carbs and manifolds in the garage, maybe I'll pull them out and compare. I have a Zenith on a Deano plenum on my car and it runs great.

my manifold was advertised in the classys as a bugspray. the zenith fits fine.
it has isolated runners.

Yes, my bad, I compared the flanges and they are the same. I "think" the offset to the fan shroud may be different, as well as isolated/plenum. Sorry, CRS sets in. The manifolds I have at the shop have elongated bolt holes for some other carb, too, but I don't know what it is. I do have a couple of crappy manifolds I could sell you but they are goobered up where the heat tubes are either cut off (bad!) or cut off and welded back on, maybe not in the correct position. There should be nice clean manifolds in the classifieds.

Good Luck!

The zeniths Run great but have some fit issues they set to the left and a new throttle tube and hole need to be drilled..

I have found the run well on both isolated and Plentm manifolds. jetting changes some.
Zeniths are better then the Holley..

Art, I saw this and it looks as if you had to do some grinding on the alt to get it to fit.
I'm sealing the deal on this manifold shortly http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=932655

I think out of all of them this one would have the best chance of clearing the alternator.... unless someone can tell me other wise?

I had to grind my alternator a bit to get mine to fit.

One thing I can say about Zenith manifolds is that having and even modifying the preheat can make a big difference in the way it runs on cool, damp days, just as with any single carb.

Kyle great mod. Never even thought about doing that but I will this winter.
I pretty sure you can get the Zenith, Bug Spray and DCNF carb to fit the same manifold. Many of the steel tubular ones had slotted bolt holes.
My vote is for the Zenith.

Kyle, that is a great idea. Im sealing the deal on a NDIX with an isolated manifold and i think i might do that. I was going to get some tubing and weld it along the bottom side of the runners then connect it to the exhaust preheat, but that looks like a better idea.

I ran a bugspray for years with 2 defrent manifolds, well 4 defrent manifolds but in a single configuration 2 manifolde and never had the heat tubes conected,1 manifold did not have a heat tube.I never had any problem it always ran great!!! then I put 2 on it and it ran greater,so I figured i'd give the pair of 44 idf stuffa try and it just kept getting better the bigger I went.& wish I had a dominator to cut inhalf !! hey I got it a progressive four barrel over each head.!!!!

Actually, I'd like to modify it some day to get a differential across the tube...i.e., plumb one end to the collector. People seem to get better perfomance out of the risers that way. I have another one at home maybe I'll dink around with this weekend and post results.

if one end isn't in the collector the preheat plays ping-pong back and forth and there is no FLOW thru the system.
