By Jove, I think that'll do the trick.

Thats an old 3d model I made back before I built my plasma cutting table which allows me to make more complicated and way cooler shapes.
My table in action. I Love it!!!!!

Just reading back, most of that road trip's issues don't seem directly related to anything. Although VWs do have a way of having random failures if they don't like what's going on.

The trailer was made out of a cut down type 2? If it's like most then there would have been a lot of weight on the tongue and of course the back of the towing vehicle. you probably tried your best to redistribute the weight in the trailer. Load distribution bars would have bought you a bit of wiggle room. I have a couple of sets (one I found in the caravan shortly after we bought it, and I had of course bought a new set just before) and wouldn't even think of towing a heavy / awkward load without them.

What would you suppose acceptable tongue and trailer gross weights might be for an early baywindow with a stock(but healthy) 1600cc type 1 engine might be?

i seem to be at odds with the world on acceptable gross for a trailer, but tongue weight is something pretty small IIRC. less than 100kg.

my type 4 that was in a really bad way, combined with a 002 towed an enclosed offroad box trailer (odd dimensions, perhaps close to 7x5) over 1000km full of belongings, and with ad-hoc securing points on the trailer roof which had more stuff strapped to the top. If that lot wasn't at least 500kg including the trailer I'd be surprised. But remember Aussies don't try to tow at 500MPH. In fact I remember when the legal maximum towing limit was 80km/h.

Mountains etc. need to be factored in too. I drove it up more than one mountain pass, but they no doubt don't compare to anything over there. I guess as long as you aren't trying to climb a cliff and you can get away with 2nd or 1st gear on steep grades it's not really a problem. With the right gears a lawnmower motor could pull a coach up a mountain without labouring, albeit slowly. What I'm really saying here is if you don't feel pushed along and don't stress the motor, plus all the towing stuff is within limits your main concerns are general mechanical failures.

jnsjr58 Just a bike? I'm assuming you mean a motorcycle otherwise you wouldn't be asking. Unless it's some hellish monster bike or some ridiculous trailer it should be perfectly fine. If it's just the usual frame with wheels or even a standard 6x4 trailer it shouldn't be a hassle. Just take it for a test run first if you are worried.

Just finished installing it. Pictures to come...

Next was the frame-rail mounting:

Wow!! That is a tight fit between the bumper and exhaust!!

Bumpin'

Anyone use this with large collectors? I have a 1-1/2 CB P/N 3644 and am worried about clearance.

I don't think you are gonna run a hitch with that header muffler system. I saw a few buses in Jerome with your exhaust and it is gonna stick out way past the bumper. This it from my exhaust thread I had going.

pooey. Hope that doesn't affect my departure angle drastically then.

This is such a great idea !!!!!

I cant wait to get mine... for my '69 Bay

I want to get this and a motorcycle carrier.

I'm mostly concerned about tongue weight.
I have a 1979 Honda Trail 90 and the manual says it has a dry weight of 90kg
but I would like to set it up like this:

How would it handle the weight and bouncing of driving on a dirt road?

SGKent Mon Jul 13, 2015 2:15 pm

you bolt to the frame of the bus behind the battery with a sister plate on top and bottom, the tie into the bumper for a little added stability. Set your ride height in between loaded and unloaded. Bouncing with an engine, trans, and bike that far back will tear the bus up, and if you get unglued it will take a lot to bring it back under control.

Bumping an older thread but has anyone had this exhaust successfully working with the vintage speed exhaust? From my eye it looks like it would be a perfect fit but that is an expensive mistake to make.

This isn't my bus but this is more or less what I plan on emulating. Just wanted to know if this exhaust should work.

jeremyrockjock Sat Jan 23, 2016 12:22 pm

I am changing the design again to a one box tube design. This will allow clearance for the Vintagespeed pipe.

I have one on the way!!!!i WILL POST THE DETAILS!! 8)

Another design change to the chain hanger that holds the receiver better and sits higher to allow more clearance.

Jeremy, I see you redesigned them to clear the pipe on VS exhausts. Do you or anyone have photos of this combo installed?
