I upgraded to an alternator today and it went more or less without a hitch until I put the engine back in. I fired it up and it wasn't firing on #3. Turned out to be a bad spark plug, so I replaced the spark plugs (only had maybe a thousand miles on a brand new set of Bosch spark plugs...). Now it's running great! Revs up as high as you want just like it should.
Until... I get going and get the RPM up to about the lowest end of the shift range in all gears. I.e., I get it up to around 13 mph and have to shift to second to keep it from squealing, and so on... It's not dependent on speed because I can run 4th gear at lower RPM and it won't squeal. It doesn't squeal if it's out of gear.
When the engine was out, the rear popped up like they do and it leaked a good amount of tranny fluid, so I topped it off when I got back to the house. Ran it again, and once I get up to RPM under load it starts squealing. It's loud enough to hear over a quiet pack muffler in a completely empty panel bus/resonator (the sort that's still too loud to break in or anything at night around here and can be heard coming from a few blocks away when inside). I checked the fan and it's clear (wouldn't be the fan anyway since I can rev it all day long as long as it's not in gear), I adjusted the belt tension (was right on the border between shims), and I phoned a friend. I give up. Ideas? |

| When it starts squealing, push lightly on the clutch. If it stops, it's probably your throwout bearing. The leak from the transmission isn't a good thing. |

| squealing with new alternator, check fan belt tension, correct pulley, broken pulley etc |
