A co worker has family over there,no news so far....
Everything went ok in HI
Engines shipped already?
Alika, I'm glad you're fine!
Everybody I know over there are good as they are on the south side of Tokyo.
The engines was supposed to ship beginning of next week but I think I can expect some delay which I really don't care.
I feel so lucky to be out of that disaster. I'm wondering how many Japanese from this region are flying away for vacation while this is happening... it's a nightmare :-&
If I remember well the guy sitting next to me in the airplane was from the north of Tokyo coast and He told me he left her wife and 2 kids to do a business trip in Texas for 2 weeks try to sell some mechanical engineered devices...I assume he is still in USA as we discussed 5 days ago. I will freak out to be far from my family while something like that happens.
Sad sad day

I finally got a filler !! waoo :D
BEFORE:
I used this cutted rectangle as a patern to shape the filler that had about 1" all around.
AFTER:
Dai, thanks for your inspiration !

Hey Greg,
Have to agree with Welchmaster that everytime I check there's more great work to look at.
Oh, and thanks for the comment on my user name. I always enjoy playing on words for my different user names on forums.
Anyway, not sure if you talked about this earlier but thought I'd ask if you have any plans to upgrade your side marker and/or tail lights to LED's? I figure if you're going to be doing any serious water fording in your future travels it might be a nice upgrade for dependability. Just a suggestion.
As usual, keep up the great work.

Agreed! Killer write up.
From the sound of it, the guy who inspired the filler he mentioned uses it for a propane tank so I assumed that's what Greg had in mind too. |

Thanks everybody!
I'm adding this filler for the future bicarburation system. the underneath will be equiped of 2 tanks.
The driver side filler will be filling the veg undertank (WVO) on driver side.
The right filler will fill the stock tank of diesel + the passenger side undertank.
Yes, it's a lot of tanks  but all my stuf is going to be diesel powered so I expect . webasto diesel air heater, webasto diesel water heater, webasto diesel cooktop... toobad there is no fridge that runs on diesel!! or maybe there is one? :-k

GL with running SVO in this engine. I suspect we'll be hearing about where you stopped to change injectors - or worse.
Regarding the diesel heaters: why not use just the coolant heater and forget the air heater? Having two heaters is overkill. The coolant heater can easily run loops for the engine (preheat), cabin hot water (through a heater exchanger), and cabin heat (efficient small heater cores with low-draw fans). This is what I am installing in my highroof Syncro project - but the Espar version. Also the Webasto diesel cooker. What a neat cooktop! 8) A compressor fridge is the only way to go with regards to refrigeration - IMO. |

C'mon Karl, let the man dream.
Over 50% of the SVO info I gathered about this motor backs your "good luck" statement up for sure, clogged injectors....I vote even worse.
Streamline your heater plan as Karl advises.
Multiple systems are not efficent for the long haul.
Love all the fabriacting.
Looks good thus far. |

GSb Have you any information on the modifications to the syncro trans so it will hold up to the toque of the diesel engine. |

As far as I know SyncroGhia's gearbox is holding the torque of 250+ ftlbs.
Untill I brake one, I cannot tell that this gearbox is not holding the torque of that Subaru diesel engine.

OOps, Ok I take my words back.
One option for the stock gearbox syncro setup will be to underpower from the ECU.
I have couple Diesel 6MT that are on my way that I want to experiment.
Multiple options:
- reversed drop down gear
- reversed ring and pignon
- reversed gearbox 180° upside down with 180° modified bellhousing.

Keeping the gearing higher than what the engine can handle is also an easy
and inexpensive way to lower the stress on the tranny.
My 6,17 r/p (pinion et couronne :) ) is not ideal, my tdi could push much
bigger gears, and it is a bit noisy at highway speed, but so far so good.
You have seen what Herman did to his transmission. You certainly seem
to have the expertise to do like he did. Would that help with the high
torque? |

Keep pressing forward with your Vanagon project, Greg. I'm anxiously awaiting the completion of this project. I'm sure the CAN-bus thing is going to be tricky, but you don't seem to be stopped by the obstacles that would stop most of us such as money, short supply of parts, time, etc. So, we live vicariously through your experience. Consider yourself the current pioneer in the Diesel Vanagon world. Let the haters hate. I had one myself on my Vanagon engine conversion. The worst part was he was on my payroll. We parted ways soon after I started it up. At least he got the chance to see that all the negative stuff he said during the project was loser crap.
One thing that you may want to consider about using straight veg oil is that there are a lot of unknown chemical compounds in (used) SVO, as opposed to reacted bioDiesel, which may tend to collect and clog late model piezo injectors. BioDiesel is a narrower collection of molecules that are much kinder than SVO to Diesel engines. Viscosity and specific gravity, plus cloud and gel points are much closer to Diesel fuel with bioDiesel than with SVO. Many of the recent TDI engines will set check engine lights with bioDiesel or less dense SVO. There must be some fuel density sensor on late model engines. Anyway, something to consider about SVO |

| Maybe instead of flipping ring and pinions or whole trannys how about reverse gear reduction hubs. And added benefit would be increase ground clearance and we get to watch the show of it being dezigned |

| Unfortunately with reverse gear reduction hubs there is a side issue of the suspension lifting up when under load, this can have some strange consequences. |
