Just picked this up yesterday. Need to replace all the tie rod ends and the rear main seal before I can start driving it around, but have driven it around the block. Also has some rust in the rockers, jacking points and the rear outriggers.

Cool!
You need:
The stock air cleaner.
Plus either block off the fresh tubes from the shroud if you are running J-tubes or get the hoses back in there if running heat exchangers.
Metal fuel line, and new German cloth covered flexable fuel line.
Before driving it any farther!!! |

Would try the "Classifieds" on this website, and you can always do a "Wanted Ad" there.
You can get into trouble advertising in the forums.... |

Oops, sorry. Would a later model air filter like this: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1026789 fit or do I need to get an early style? I'd muh rather spend $20 than $100. |

Just get a cheap paper filter until the proper filter finds you at the right price. |

68 on ait cleaners sit on a uh table i guess, while your style hangs from the 2 hole bracket to the right of the engine |

Paper air cleaner will do in a pinch, but stock works much better.
You should be able to piece a 1964-67 setup together for much less than $100. |

Or get the correctly sized fuel line that will not fail in a year with the US fuel blends. |

Hey guys, thanks for the advice, I will try a paper filter for now and keep an eye out for a stock oil bath. I know eric from nor cal relics through a Land Rover group I belong to, I'll have to poke around is pile of parts.
Anyway, another question. I just pulled the motor to replace the rear main seal and any others I can easily replace. I noticed that the bell housing on the transmission has ben ground out larger than stock. What would be a reason for doing it? Only thing I can think of is to fit a later model engine if they have a bigger flywheel?
Here is the engine number, anyone know what engine that would be? I'll try doing a search.

The trans was definately ground out because it was originally a 6 volt setup. It's very common and you have nothing to worry about. I see this all the time at work. |
