How much headliner does it have? Is it just the center square or does it go around the rear window and down the door pillars? This is the most difficult thing to fake. In Yurrip, people would ofte dress up their car but changing the headliner would have been a lot of trouble to go to.

The Headliner surrounded the rear window and had vinyl on the B pillars. Its currently under going a restoration and looks like this at the moment.

Want to put it back properly, everything points towards deluxe other than the VIN code of 111.

Looks like a deluxe to me with all the metal grab tabs down the door post and down past the rear window......They don't exist in a standard. If your car is a European standard, it wouldn't have side chrome, running board chrome etc. It also would only have one horn grill. A Canadian Standard front vin tag beside (Typ) says VW1/11....An export deluxe also says VW1/11 beside (typ) on the ID plate. Standards also came with rubber plugs for the 4 rear access holes below rear quarter windows because they are exposed....deluxes are covered by the headliner and don't have plugs. Under the front hood standards don't have wire cover brackets to hold wire cover in place....they have a trunk liner that folds up to hide wires. Oh, another thing probably already mentioned....standards don't have interior light switches in the A-pillars, its just a blank stamp without a hole for the switch. Hope this helps, there are a lot more differences already mentioned earlier in this thread.

Can anyone post up pics of what the seats frames look like in 53/54 standards?
Are they different than the 56/57 std seats?
Thank in advance.

They are the same as deluxe pre55 seats, no back rest adjustment. Geoff had a pair a while back for sale?

Thanks guys, I think the standard seats would be taller than the deluxe because there are no seat rails on the pan sticking up a couple inches. The standard seats sit right on the pan.
Now does anyone have a set I can buy? 😉
Geoff sold his :(

Wow, some great pics on this thread!

Can I ask a quick question here:

Would an egg tail light Canadian Standard/Custom have semaphores?
I have leads on one but the photos are kind of vague. I'm pretty sure it has eggs. No front fenders on it to discern from there. I can barely see a standard steering wheel. I really like standards and want to build one!

Eggs have semaphores. Bullets came with snowflakes. If those sentences make sense to you, I would say you have a problem.

They make total sense. Yup I'm a mess! Thanks.

Here are some links to pics below of the car.

Also outlined the spec and what is standard and is extra

I am getting mixed signals as to what my beetle is. its an early 55 march registered. Although could be a very late 54 beetle produced from the factory for the UK market. We were and still are dealers of VW. and supplied the car new in 55 to a lady in Scotland.

I am trying to work out the original colour of the car. SO have listed below what was extra an standard on the car below.

I have a 1955 UK standard S sedan 36HP. It has the following as standard

passenger horn grill only
no front hood liner
no chrome around speedo
wing nuts to hold front seats in place
black tank, black interior knobs, black shifter and handbrake, black steering column, black wipers
3 spoke black steering wheel
painted speaker grill, quarter vent windows in same colour as car
Rubber running boards, no chrome
small cloth headlining only
crash gearbox (not syncro like the deluxe)
tooth pick door handles, drivers only locking from exterior only
cable brakes originally (although upgraded recently to drums, too risky!!
rubber mats with the german oatmeal weave carpet.

Extras that were ordered from the factory (M0001 is code for chrome package)
chrome bumpers, hub caps, exterior chrome trim strips, chrome headlight bezels

Hey Don, just found this in your backyard up by the narrows sitting in a field as I was driving by. It looks like it has been stripped. I can't figure out the white knob on the left side of the wheel. Btw it's a 54 and all the research I've done indicates it a Canadian Custom. But who am I to say I'm new at this vw thing.

Trevor P Thu Aug 20, 2015 11:26 pm

Could be for a gas heater. Any evidence of one? Looks like she's ultramaroon too.
BTW have you been educated on the Saskatchewan Vintage VW Export tax (SVVWET)?

Wiggy Fri Aug 21, 2015 5:18 am

Look like a knob for an accessory windshield washer.

Schutterman Fri Aug 21, 2015 8:56 am

I think your right. It's for the windshield washer.

I just picked up this '57 beetle this fall. I believe it to be a Canadian custom. Its sitting on an early '60 pan so the steering column and steering wheel is incorrect. The current body colour has faded out to a nice silver, but appears to have been more of a blue silver or possibly even a turquoise. There are hints of red primer under that but original paint would have been silver or grey. The Dash and body work around the interior windows was painted red over the original paint.
I'm curious about the seats and door panels. Would they be original or some custom job done in the past? The seats are red vinyl and there is the cardboard piece on the seat back under the checkered upholstery.
Let me know what you think.

The story on this car is it belonged to the owner of a Master Service Centre in Brandon, MB. He had replaced the rear seat with a wooden shelf and used the car to pickup and deliver parts for the business. The shop was located on 1st street around Rosser or Princess Ave I believe. If anyone has any old photos of the service station and this car or previous owner I would love to see them!

Thread revival! Just picked up a pretty original 56 Standard.

Few questions to ask as I go.

Cheers.
