I just picked up a used autometer pro comp tach, it was never installed in a car and didn't have a manual with it. I am trying to figure out how to get it to the correct 4 cylinder mode. I found a manual online and did a search here but it is still unclear. the manual says to clip the brown and orange or brown and blue loops depending on the pulse(1 or 2). I only see a brown loop on mine, the blue wire isn't looped. Anybody experienced anything like this?
thanks

Try this link from Autometer to see if they have the instructions that you need.

i looked at that site and they all showed two loops on the back, mine only has a brown loop. I would call them but they are closed for the holidays. |

I have an old 9700 and the wires arnt what they say they are either. & it was so long ago that I had it in my street car I cant remember.I still have the instructions but cant find them yet. it was way better than the POS msd fast tack that I replaced it with, what a piece of junk,it would let me make 7 runs then start miss firing the motor on the 8th.I have a new 3904 with matching spedo but there just to big for my bug., what # is your tach? |

mine is the 3904, 5'' monster tach with shift light. It is the 10,000 rpm version even though my rev limiter is 6800. I would have rather had the 8,000 but for $75 I figured it would be ok.
It is huge but it is going on a rail so I should have room to put it in a good spot. |

Blue loop maybe under tape...
Since most tachs use red for +12 volts, black for ground, green for trigger, and white for lighting light..... Check blue wire... IF blue wire is not a loop where does it go? Maybe its already cut and "other end" is pushed into housing?

I was thinking that might be the case with the blue wire, if so, I need to know the pulse according to this. Any ideas?

I have a newer model Pro-Comp II. It did not require cutting the loop for calibration. After the tach is hooked up, you calibrate it electronically. Yours may be the same. |

thanks for the help, but I am just kind of confused by that calibration
chart that says 4 cylinder(2 pulse) and 4 cylinder(1 pulse). is a VW motor for sure the 2? |

One last question for you guys, I dont have lights on the rail yet and don't plan on driving in the dark for a while. Will this tack work fine if I dont hook up the white wire for light? |

You could hook white wire (lighting) to same wire as power (+12 volts) and lighting in tach will come on whenever ign. switch is on... But if its not dark, why bother...

Your mission if you choose to accept it is to e-mail Autometer and ask, then share information with the rest of us....

??? I cant beleave you dont know the answer to that.you have disapointed us,and we thought you knew almost everything, but, but, but now I am perplexed .do I take on the mission or take a vacation?? hey what's that smoke??.just kidden , bored again. I havent noticed that the tach's were on a pulse type of system.when I was a marine tech the outbord tach's were set by the pulse, but it was the pulse of the stator for the charging system.the cylinders didnot matter.all yamaha had the same ,and all omc had the same but deferent amount,as did merc. I cant beleave it,s been that long since I put a tach on anything other than marine related. I always used my ears & butt to shift (that way your hands dont ever come offt the steerin wheel).oh well nuff said, hope the op got enough good info to get his tach worken. and by the way .have a great and safe new year.( when it gets hear) untill then try shifting with your ears !!! |
