He guys,
Can someone measure the distance between the head studs of a T1.
The distance between each of the 4 long head studs that mounts the head to the cylinders. Like the distance between the 2 top studs of cyl number one.............
The reason I ask is that I have a few spare engines for my DAF 44 and want to tune one of them. They are 2 cyl ac boxer engines with 850cc. They look like halve a t1 and was wandering if I could use big bore cylinder sets on them.
But I don't have an t1 engine at the moment to check the head stud distance..............

type 1 [1300-1600] is- 3.211" or 81.5mm
36 hp is- 2.660 or 67.5mm
Please post a picture of this motor if you can.

Thanks!! Measured the DAF case and the distance was 80mm.
How much do you need to machine to get a 92mm or 94mm cylinder on?
Think its possible but not sure how big I can go.
The stroke is 73.5mm so with 94mm pistons it would end up as an 1020cc.
Scat split heads. Custom made camshaft and centre mounted 44 idf.
Could be nice...........

A 94mm cylinder is about 97.25 in diameter at the bottom, a 90.5/92mm cylinder is 96mm in diameter. That is a cool little motor, I have allways wanted to build a 2 cylinder VW motor.

The dia of the hole for the cylinder of the DAF engine is 94mm and have enough body to machine to match these big bore cylinders.
Need to measure how high these cylinders are.
The only thing is that T1 cylinders have no cooling ring all around. DAF cylinders do. Should this be a problem?

It's not a problem for VW's :wink: . Seriously, You'll be fine. Can you put an oil cooler on it just in case? On the 94 mm jugs you can turn down the skirts a bit too. Neat project. |

I wonder if you can cut a regular VW cam in half and fit it in that thing? then get a set of stright cut gears , and take a 82mm crank and machine it to the same specs as your crank and build a 1138cc mini monster!!!

The VW parts are visual the same but the dimensions are different and will not fit or possible to modify. There are two different different size of crankshafts available. In the early DAF engines they had a 65mm stroke with 76mm bore (590cc). Later they increased the bore to 85,5mm (746cc) and ended with increasing the stroke to 73,5mm (844cc).
So with 92mm bore I can make 864cc or 977cc.
With 94mm bore 902cc or 1020cc.
Not decided what to do. In Europe we have several historic classes in roadracing and hillclimbs. The classes are up to 850cc or 1000cc.
I want to go to a bigger bore so I can use bigger valves. The original heads are very limited.
Also an option is offset grinding the crankshaft to 64mm and a bore of 92mm so I end with 850cc.
Or offset grinding the crankshaft to 72mm and a bore of 94mm so I end with 1999cc.
Not sure if offset grinding is something the do.
Als o I love the SCAT Split Heads. Think they are perfect for my project.

Its very easy to mount an oil cooler. Lines are already there.........
How high are standard T1 cylinders?

You might want to look at the vintage speed section. they do a lot of work fitting bigger engine parts into the old VW 36hp 1200cc based engines.
I think you could gain a lot of knowledge on barrel modifications and valve train changes that you could adopt to your DAF.
Cool project. Keep us posted to your progress would love to watch this one.
Some guys are grooving the barrels to fit over the smaller stud spacing and making rocker arms and even intake ports on stock heads.

might be able to cut off a engle cam too, or just send one to them to be reground.
and dont forget the head stud pattern isant square.
toyota also made a 2 cylinder opposed air cooled motor, for thier vw knock off car "publica" witch I presume is the publics car, sorta kinda like the peoples car. and yes it was shaped sorta kinda like a bug, only a little squished.we had one in japan(okinawa) |

the dimensions of the OLD piston and cylinder kits is here
the modern 90.5 kits have the same outer dimensions as 92mm
the modern AA thick wall 92 have the same outer dimensions as 94mm

Regarding the cam gears. I measured the tigh fit of the gear on the crankshaft and that is the same for the T1 and the DAF. Both 42mm
So that is not the isue. What I would like to know is the dia of these both gears :D or the dimension center camshaft and center crankshaft.
