I was wondering what would be the the best modification too improve power without looking like a "hot rod" engine.

I have a stock 1972 standard Beetle.

Basically I'd like non-VW car guys to assume it's stock at first glace.

For example I'd like to keep the oil bath filter, but I wouldn't be apposed to a different carb. The exhaust isn't too visible from under the hood so as long as the tail pipes use the stock holes I'd be happy. That sort of thing

Also keeping within a sane budget would be nice too. I'm not on a shoe string budget but the sky isn't the limit either

Let me know if you have any thoughts.

non-VW guys think the engine should be in the front. They have no idea what stock looks like.

put a lawn mower enging in the front also.
keep the stock small carb & intake & air kleener,but add a set of 44 idf webbers,mild cam,rockers,hide away header,plentt of port work,84 mm stroker crank 5.5 rods,94mm p&j.stage 1 pressure plate.fullflow& filter&cooler. and build some black louvered boxes to cover the webbers&intakes.use a stock single port intake and run it into the boxes. use good and quiet mufflerthat has a 2"outlet so the camarow&mustang& the few honda's have a place to drip out after you have eaten them. no go have funn.

There is a guy overseas making 2180's with a stock carb and exhaust. I don't have the link but its been posted more than a few times here. The engines look 100% bone stock from the outside. I'd imagine they are stump pullers for sure... 2180 with a stock solex... intense.
That being said the sky is nearly the limit.
Personally I would go 69x94. Keep your engine width stock all while making (if properly set up) around 100-120hp.
Be careful with heater boxes though. Anything about a 1776 should have performance heater boxes on it or your likely to fry your heads.

Build a bulletproof stroker an hide a NOS system under the oil bath air cleaner. Would be cool... 8)

Fuel injection with stockish manifolds and single throttle body under your air cleaner. Weld a bracket to hold your peashooters out hte back and a big hideaway system under the fender. Big Blue bottle in the behind the backseat with a speaker cover over it. Killer gerbox with M&H DOT tires.

Or you could do like the guy did about 15 years ago relocate the firewall for a totally hideaway turbo injected, NO2, 300hp stroker bone stock EVERYTHING as far as body, wheels and tires. It was even that hideous baby blue colour.....

seems that just being a VW gives enough of the Sleeper factor.
I used to have no trouble getting a guy with a V8 longtravel rail to lay down a $100 for a sand drag. Mind you the buggy I drove then was a 70's 87 wheelbase frame, with a swingaxle, used aluminum parts that were tarnished to say the least, and some chewed up dick cepek 14.50 paddles.

There is someone on here that has the ultimate sleeper engine

it's a 2L+ turbo but too look at looks like a bog stock 1600 twinport.
Turbo is hidden under the apron and ducted into the carb through what looks like the preheat hose and stock oilbath air cleaner

someone will have pics of it

2332 EFI, crankfire turbo mated to a Berg 5 speed tranny.

Nah that's not the one but it was on a red late bug with tombstone tail lights

This one was carbed, had a 34pict3 carb and the aircleaner acted as the carb hat and the up pipe was inside the preheater hose.

To look at even most knowledgeable vw people would dismiss it as a stock early 70s carbed 1600.

Be fucked if i can find the thread it was in.

I had to look twice , thought the ex was on the ground.that aint gonna work around hear lol. but I do like the intake,that is what should be used with the center mount idf stuff.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have to admit I wasn't thinking as extreeme as most of you. I guess I just need a little more nitros in my blood
