pretty sure the late bay hitch above is made by ORIS. it's OE but technically not made by westfalia. still an excellent hitch.

Cheers, I've goggled Oris but I can't find any info on this particular tow bar. :o

oorwullie Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:40 pm

i think it's maybe a PEKA and i'm almost 100% certain that it's not supposed to be bent like a banana.

chrisradioman Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:54 pm

Its 100% supposed to be bent. yoy can tell ita factory made luke it. :-)

maybe a previous owner tried towing a factory witthit?

another possibility is that it's bent in the factory but that it was never designed to be fitted to a bay window bus.

for instance i know of a hitch made for an early 80's jetta that has been modified by a good welder with mounting plates that now match a 76 bay chassis bolt holes perfectly.

it even says volkswagen on the type plate and once sailed thru' a police check here towing a beetle on a trailer with no comment but they did give him a ticket for the illegal non standard exhaust system...........

i'll post further information on ID' ing yer hook if and when i find any suitable facts. :P

germansupplyscott Fri Aug 31, 2012 6:41 pm

yes it is supposed to be bent. it follows the shape of the bumper.

not much vintage stuff but this is where to find oris trailer hitches:

thanks, it cant have been modified it has no grinding marks or anything on it. the tube is so strong you would need specialist equipment to bend it. I'm certain its an original part but not sure who made it. when I bought it of Custom and Comercial they had 4 identical ones there, also my Mate Simon has the same type bought off Ebay. :-)

Thanks Scott I'll take a look. I agree with you it is supposed to be bent. :-)

so i take it that from all 5 of these things not a single one of them had a manufacturers plate attached? :?:

Oris had and has a square tube structure, I haven't seen a circular structure from Oris.

The closest tow hitch is Peka Typ: R 101 as you may see at this manual.

http://www.amescador.nl/documenten/Peka%20R101.pdf

I know it does not have a bow shape, however as you may see the early style TYp: 67 http://www.amescador.nl/documenten/ahk-peka-R67-vw-t2.pdf does not have A curved shape either.

At both pictures of the site the photos have a curved early style, so my guess is:

Either Peka was producing two styles of each (typ) like they have done on other models

http://www.kupplung.de/mall/1/files/samples/vw0836_v1.pdf

Or, there is one more style (Curved) from 1972 to 1976 since I cant find a manual between that period of time.( If someone has this manual please upload it in here)

I think the bow shape came out of the factory like that so its invisible when the bumper is installed.

I hope that shape was not created from a heavy towing or else the structure of the bus would have been unshaped after that too. :(

Any ideas about this one?

I didn't really look at them I put a deposit on mine & picked it up later, they told me it was a Westfalia but, they could have been wrong.

That's the one it doesn't have the bow I know but every other aspect is exactly the same. Good find. :D

I am truly sorry to all and particularly to Scott for my statement above.

I just found a 1972 tow hitch made by Oris? Which is not squared.

It looks really close to Typ: 67 however its not.

Is it just the tag swamped from another vehicle.

Anyone out there with the same Oris to back this up?

rsbadura I am working on the electrical and your posted diagram helps a lot, thanks.

I got some questions that I will really appreciate to be answered from you or from another member in here, since I am doing this once and I wanna do it right.

The green light at the cluster has a part number 111.919.239A correct?

What kind of a bulb goes in there, the same as all the rest?

You just place the plug in there? ( A photo will be great)

Also you mention a J20 relay, may you please provide an original part number for this relay, if possible.

At this moment I have an after market relay 4x21W+2x5w since I am using side turn signals too.

Also, I have found a tow hitch without the tag on, which came off a 1979 model, however I know 321125 is for the latest models 1800kg and the one I have is more like a 321079.

Does anyone know if the latest of all European models with a 1584cc engine had a 1200kg tow hitch?

Is there any first hand owner out there with a European 1.6L latebay and has a 321125 on or only the 2.0L had it installed?

I have placed a WTB ad for the tag, is there a place that sales a blank one?

Thank you for your time.

I'm sure this has been asked some where, but I have a Westfalia hitch that I have been reluctant to put on because I am not sure if I can tow using US trailers. It looks close to a 2 inch ball, but I don't want to be unsafe. Does anyone know if a euro ball will work with a US hitch?

galexander Tue Apr 02, 2013 9:16 pm

AutoBus73, did you ever find out anything about that Westy hitch?
I just picked up a '69 with the exact same hitch and harness plug in.
I was hoping for more info on it.
thanks!

If interested, (and have 45 min. to kill) take a look at my 5 part video on Youtube of the hitch I built for my 77 Westy, sorry my Wife was shutting off the camera between takes when I thought she was hitting the pause button! Kris
