Any ideas what’s going on here? New TBO making some noise, it it looks like maybe the pressure plate could be the problem? Looks like they are lining up good, but something looks like it’s scraping, and there is that red dust which isn’t a good sign either.

I have a NOS TBO on the way, and WW said I could send the bearing in to see if it’s defective.

Anyway all that to say I’m back in action for round three on this beauty!!

Hahaha I meant TOB (throw out bearing)!!

On my way back from the shop with my crank shaft serviced with a OEM distributor gear. Now the assembly begins….again.

We’ve all been there, at least those of us who have built engines.

Thanks Braukuche, good to know even the experienced have to go back in… I really think there is some luck involved in this.

Here is the source of my noisy clutch, the disc wasn’t centered correctly. Since it’s out, and I have an NOS throw out bearing I’m going to get an NOS pressure plate as well. I noticed as I was taking it off it was stuck about half way down… I’m determined to get this all straightened out before I put the engine back in.

Reading this book, it has great inspiration and insights as to why we are compelled to do this…the author drives a 1970 Ghia, so you know his sensibilities are in the right place.

Luisa and Luigi Segre 1956. Now that’s a face to launch a thousand Ghias.

Nice photo. They were married in 1955 according to his biography in Wikipedia

It's an interesting read.

Had some serious success today. Maybe getting the picture of Luigi and his wife brought me luck. Engine back in….complete NOS clutch…no leaks…started right up, sounds amazingly quiet, no clutch noises. I will get it out on the highway tomorrow. Thanks again for all the encouragement here on the Samba.

Well done young man...I envy you your physical mobility. :) I have a faint TOB sound that I hope won't get too noisy in the coming year. I'm past crawling under Ghias and have to pay someone else to do the work. :(

Thanks John, don’t delay on those noises… my bearing went out pretty quick and it’s not a roadside fix. I highly suggest scoring one of these NOS bearings in the classifieds or looking on eBay, I’ve found some good parts on eBay with really comparable prices. My NOS pressure plate was only 50 bucks, the disc was 30…. And yes I’m feeling it in my back this morning….

Tragic he died so young. Would be great to meet his sons, I’m guessing Luisa is still alive. Amazing story.

In this photo, Mrs. Segre reminds me of current British actress Minnie Driver

Nice one Rome!

Not much to see here different… she’s an ugly beauty… running like I knew she could. Drove about 45 miles today on the highway and city. I got a tiny leak coming from a push rod tube, I think it will fix it self when it all settles in. Super impressed with the clutch, this is the easiest and quietest the car has ever run since I’ve had it….well worth the sweat and the wait.

I love that engine look— perfect for your car!
Great to have a happy ending.

Thank you John and Michael. It’s our 10th record in more than twice as many years so we feel lucky to be able to keep doing this. Maybe we’ll see you in London John? Or maybe wait till summer when we might come through Brighton. Either way let me know and I’ll set you up with some passes, would be great to see you and Jacqui.

Yes I think it will have to be Brighton which is always the preferred venue for us. Look forward to meeting up again. :)
