I have a 1967 VW Beetle with 63,000 original miles that I am have inherited and am working on.
It is a one family car and I have all receipts for repair work. It was always well cared for and never abused and only driven on surface streets.
I am getting a clunking/ rumbling sound from the right rear wheel area when going over even small bumps in the road.
I have checked the shocks and made sure they are tightened correctly.
I have checked the bushings on the Z bar, which are good.
The tires are brand new and balanced.
Years ago I took engine out to replace the clutch and TO bearing.
Any ideas of things to check?
It’s loud enough that it sounds like the suspension is going to fall out on the road. |

Welcome to the samba!
Check this body to shock tower bushing.
It may look in good condition but,
They can be worn out.
One of my 67's was making a clunking sound kinda like you describe. Even when crossing painted cross walk stripes it clunked. It bugged the hell out of me for months. I discovered the above bushing was worn as you can see in the second pic.
I replaced both bushings and now, No more clunk! :D

Make sure it ain't the motor coming off the transmission.
Clunking sounds may be the body mount rubber missing or worn. You may as well check the two up front under the fuel tank over the beams. |
