View original topic: the Eagle 2235 camshaft [impressions]

I remember when I was selecting parts that a few people had never tried this cam and were somewhat curious about it. So here's a quick build overview first.

1776cc motor
stock heads with cleaned up ports and heavy duty single springs, no three angle valve job, solid rocker shafts.
CW 4140 crank
Stock flywheel, 8 pinned
Weber progressive carb
1 3/8" header with hideaway muffler
approx. 8.7:1 compression with 0.040-0.042 deck heights.

Everything balanced to .5g or less tolerance

I think that's all the important stuff.
The first thing I noticed about this combo is the powerband being a bit higher. It feels like just barely over 1500rpm it hits it's "happy place" and stays there until 5000rpm.
With my old stock 1600 single port, I had torque right off idle but it ran out of breathe by 3000 or so. The new setup has what I would call mid range torque. Once it starts spinning a bit it really takes off. You can feel the change in acceleration and it doesn't run out of breathe until beyond what I'm willing to push it to...

Judging from the specs, this cam should be smaller than even the engle 100, so perhaps a bigger cam would have helped me produce even more power? I'm not sure... As it is, I'm quite happy with it.

If you look at the dur @ 0.050" figures (the best way to get a feel for what a cam will do-they are both 236'), then with only .009" difference in cam lift (W100-.383" vs 2235-.374") they seem to be very similar cams. It would be interesting to compare lobe shapes. Good to hear it gets it's oomph starting at just over 1500 rpm.

Just looking at the difference between the adv dur and 0.050" figures (34 degrees), it seems to have fairly fast ramps; it gets the valve off the seat and into enough lift (above .050") that the cylinder starts to fill quickly. The W100 has 40' between the 2 duration figures, and that split is normal for a lot of performance cams; I think the longer ramps are usually necessary for the VW diameter springs we have to use for long life. This is why cams with a smaller difference between the 2 dur figures (Engle's VZ and FK40 series have about 30') tend to be harder on lifter bores and take more spring to properly control the valve train.

A number of CB's cams have really long, soft ramps (some over 50 degrees) and give the impression of more duration than they have (athough this isn't one of them). If I ever have the pleasure of meeting Pat Downs I have a question or 2....

Just my 2 1/2 cents (I'm Canadian, eh). Al

I chose the CB Eagle 2242 cam for that same reason - slow ramps which are easy on the valve train. The 'advertised' duration is 298° which makes it seem like a very aggressive cam but the duration @ .050" lift is 248° giving a 50° spread on the ramp. Seemed like a perfect cam for my 2110 daily driver with 44mm HPMX carbs and CB Los Panchito heads with dual springs and 1.25:1 rocker arms. That will narrow the spread between advertised and .050" lift some but I haven't degreed the cam with the ratio rockers in place yet - and my math skills aren't what they once were

. I should have the 2110 up and running in my Ghia in a few weeks. Still waiting for a few misc parts - I cut a couple of head studs too short - I need at least 1 thread above the head bolt to be good. Originally I was going to install an Engle W110 with CB Los Bandito single spring heads but I tend to 'turn up the wick' once in a while and didn't want to over rev that combo. The 2242 cam combo should allow 7000 rpms (or more if I dare!) if I need it. And yes - everything has been balanced to a gnat's ass.

Looking at the 2010 Engle catalog I see 30 cams for the VW - CB offers 23 by my count. Seems between the two they have all our needs covered when it comes to cam choices.
If you don't mind my asking - out of curiosity what are the questions you'd be asking Pat Downs?
