I am tracking down some smoke issues as discussed in another thread, but assumed it would be wiser to start a new one on this specific topic.
I have an external full size http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G4985-1/?rtype=10 oil filter mounted underneath the engine compartment.
I have noticed that the smoke seems to correlate with oil levels. I have been trying to use the dipstick, but I noticed an oddity. When I stick the dipstick in straight (round handle towards the back) it would sometimes read a quart low. If I rotate it towards the driver side, it reads dead on the line.
What's the relaitonship between external oil filters, deep sumps (which I don't have, yet)and the stock dipstick? How much oil should the engine have in it? I always assumed "to the line" regardless, since that's indicative of what the block has in it at the moment.
Any input appreciated as always. Thanks again for your guidance.
Edit: the reason I ask is I am concerned that my oil may be "too high" which is contributing to the smoke I see.
Please note I am in the process of also doing leakdown testing for other sources, original thread here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=476660

Have you tried a stock dip stick in it? that way you can mark your after market stick to see if you have too much oil.

I don't have one available, maybe I can find the measurement from the hole to the stick somewhere online. The aftermarket one AFAIK is the same length, but want to confirm.
I also need to determine what the proper level for a car with the extra reservoir is. I assume the same, but asking doesn't hurt. |
