Hey guys,
My squareback is soon going to be at the painting stage and I have no experience at all with painting, so I'm wondering how you guys go about it?
I've been doing lots of reading online, but I'm not sure which way to go. I can't really paint the car where it is, as it lives out in my mum's garage/carport and there's not really enough room and it's kind of open to dust and bugs, etc.
I've found a place that rents out their spray booth and oven for $300 a day and the girl there reckons most people are there for about 6 hours or so.
The price sounds reasonable to me, but was wondering how I would go about it? The fenders are currently off. Would you prime it at home and then take it to the spray booth and do the rest in a day? I would have thought it would take longer than a day to sand, paint inside and out and then clear coat?
But like I said - I dont really have experience painting cars, so I'm not sure.
The place is in Bayswater and the car lives in Point Cook, so it would be a massive distance to tow!
Just wondering how you guys go about painting your cars?? |

| You can paint/clear on a clean, damp slab or lawn in one day. Buy CUSTOM PAINTING by Tom Brownell for his expertise. |

I just paint in my garage. But, I like to make sure I have enough paint to do the job.
In your case, I'd sand and prime everything I could, and paint and clear coat the inside. I'd also do under the fenders (insides of them) too. Do that in your carport, and try to do it early in the day, when the bugs and dust are at their least. Plus, it'll get you warmed up for painting the outside, as you'll have some practice time with the paint, clear, and the spray gun. :D
By doing that, you minimize the "rush time" you'll have in the booth. I only say that, as you'll be spraying a lot of paint and clear doing the entire car. Yes, it can be done in 1 day, but it's a ton of work, and makes for a really long day.
I prefer to break it up, and do it in sections, that way I'm more comfortable with what's going on, and I'm not rushed. I'll tape and paper off sections that I've already painted. I use the weld seam joints for tape lines, when shooting the outside, so you're not overspraying the inside. When doing door jambs and the insides of the doors, tape and paper off what you've already shot, that way you minimize overspray on already painted parts. Keep in mind, that it might take several hours just to tape and paper off everything you're not spraying later. This IS best done at home, and not in the booth. Yes, you might have to "repair" some of your tape/paper, but it shouldn't take very long (since you're transporting it to the booth). Get some wax and grease remover too, as you'll want the surface clean before painting (it'll help remove any bugs while in transport too  ).
One more thing to keep in mind, be aware of how many coats of paint you apply to get the desired color you want, as some paints get darker, or lighter depending on the number of coats applied. Black will be the exception though. You'll want to remember that, for when you shoot the outside. Like it says on the can 2 to 4 coats or until hiding or desired color is achieved.
Then take it to that place you mentioned, and shoot the color and clear on the outside.
There's no need to sand the color before clearing either, unless you've got some runs. Keep in mind that metallics don't like to be sanded, which means IF you're shooting them, that you'll have to re-shoot the entire panel IF you sand out a run.
Most base coats dry fairly quick though, so IF you have a problem, you can fix it. I use PPG products almost excusively, and most of them are ready for top coat (clear) in 40 minutes to an hour (tack time is 10 to 15 minutes) depending on the number of color coats (2 coats is 30 minutes, 3 or more is an hour). If you get a run in the clear coat, ADD more coats of clear to help "bury the run" so you'll have enough clear to wet sand out. Don't stop and try to fix it, as the clear WILL start to harden in the gun, and not spray worth a shit (it'll be junk).
I hope this helps. |

Thanks bobnotch for all that detailed information!
I like the idea of painting the inside at home. Unfortunately, the space at home isn't really big enough to be able to paint the outside properly.
I'm looking forward to getting stuck in. Thanks for all of your advice!! |

Well, IF you can get a fairly wind free day, you could use saw horses and some 2 by 4's to hold the fenders so you can shoot the insides (car out of the carport). Then after they're shot, move them out of the carport. You can even pull the doors off, and do them seperately. If you do it in sections (or a piece at a time) you'll have more room to play with in a limited area. Break it up into smaller sections. Look at the guys in the UK or Europe, their garages aren't much bigger than a tool shed, but they still do the work in them. But you can always use plastic sheeting to close off your car port to make an improvised spray booth. Or even shoot parts of it outside IF it's not windy. If you look in the TOOB thread of this forum, you'll see Dong is painting a bus in his carport (the entire thing). Now that's an undertaking. :D
When doing the inside, try to do the center (or 1 side) and work your way out. Also try not to set it up in a way that you're overspraying what you just shot.
Having sprayed a VW Thing (it's open and everything gets painted), was probably the hardest vehicle I've ever done. That's because everything gets painted, you have to really be aware of what's wet paint, and what's left to paint. Hoses and feet were my biggest issues, as you're limited in the space you have available to you. Good luck, and I hope this helps. |
