Quick push rod question to double check. Was doing some reading using the search feature and came across some talk about chromoly pushrods and it was suggested to check the pushrods with a magnet. Next valve adjustment I checked mine with a telescoping magnetic pickup and to my suprise it does stick to all pushrods. Now I do not know if they are chromoly or simply steel. Would the rule simply be if the magnet sticks then adjust to a "loose zero" whether or not you know if they are specifically chromoly steel?

If a magnet sticks to the pushrod use loose zero lash. must likely you have chromoly push rods, are they black in color ?

For the sake of clarity, the ends of all pushrods are Steel. Make sure to test the pushrod Shafts. It may seem obvious but you never know :?

I use a snug no play zero.up to a minus lash when cold.and the color of the pushrod dont tell you squat,I have silver chromoly,black chromoly,silver aluminum,black steel(some awassom empi steel ones that have the ends ground to a point new in the package like that, there sweet.

Great points guys! I did check the shafts with a magnet and it did in fact stick to the shafts.......that just doesnt sound right :oops: Thanks again for the help on this

chrome-moly is a type of steel, they are the same as far as your lash is concerned

aloy of steel.I like the cr with the morealuminum in it,it tends to harden better when nitriding.& beter carratoristics (yup I cant spell that one at this moment by my self, tired&late)

characteristics is the word we are looking for. But youse gotta be a character to really appreciate those empi pushrods, they can double as arrows being so pointy.

SO all you Chromoly Dudes are saying that the valve lash for an engine with chromoly pushrods will need to be set for lets say .002 or less?

I have these pushrods and I ran across some information about this from CB. I just gave birth to a 1776 and I noticed that the valves which were originally set to .006 were tight like .001 after I broke in the cam. I readjusted them to .006. I have only ran this baby for short trips.
I guess to how I understanded it, the pushrods will grow with the cylinders as the engine reaches operating temp. What about the possibilities of burning valves during sometime. Please someone convince me its going to be OK.
