Thanks for clarifying. You never know who is reading this, it could be a high school kid thinking this is a fine way to make a daily driver. You do see ball joints configured this way in stock applications in in fwd cars. These are not load bearing ball joints. All 4 bus ball joints carry their share of vehicle weight. Lower balljoints on fwd cars are meant to handle lateral loads ( side ) The all have a wear spec of no perceptable movement.
Thr kong slots are still available just do some digging. |

You also see them on many cars with front a-arms with the spring mounted on the lower a-arm so the lower ball joint carries the full load of the vehicle weight at that corner. Take a peak under a new corvette or old MG or anything in between and you will see them. Again just a comment that ball joints can and have been successfully engineered to work facing either way.
BTW sorry to clog your thread Notvanity, great looking show bus and I love seeing the fabrication that went into it. Drive safely! |

Not successfully engineered. Gm is on it's fifth revision (last I checked) and still can't get it right. C4,5,6 all have a horrible track record with balljoint failures. I think art morrison us the only place making a joint that holds up for any amount of time and it's a fairly exotic peice. I haven't worked on mg's so I can't comment there, using british engineering as example for anything is a reach if ever I saw it.
I stand by my comment that this idea is an exercise in planned failure. |

| Well there is the "anything in between" part of my comment. So what about the BMWs, Porsches, Mercedes, Fords, Ferraris, Lotus, Fiats, Audis etc. with that setup. Lower ball joint with stud facing up and spring mounted to lower arm? Anyway this is my last comment on this, no reason to drift farther off topic. Properly engineered a load bearing ball joint can face either way and be fit for the purpose as evidenced by the fact that it is a standard practice in the automotive industry on many makes and over many years. |

| :D You are doing an exceptional job on your bus' suspension...keep up the good work and don't worry what the stock nazis think about it...they all have their own busses to worry about...not yours....I can't wait to see your bus completed....VW busses are unique unto their owners, and your bus really stands out among the so-so stockers....keep up the excellent work, and have a very happy new year ! :D |

Он написал, что многие на тебя будут выливать грязь за такие "издевательства" над благородным автобусом, но он лично считает что это прикольно, зачетно типа!, признает тебя короче, вот.

Great job with all the fabrication. Beautiful work.
As far as all the discussion about ball joints. Check them once in while, if/when they get loose replace them before they come apart. SAME AS ANY OTHER CAR. |
