Thinking of using a single carb on my 1776 DP with 110 cam. I like the single carb look. Which carb would be the best option?
Any estimate how much HP loss there will be not using double carbs? ( 2 single Solex 34's)
Thanks KJ |

:? A 1776cc (90.5) pistons will need more fuel...not less in order to run efficiently.
A cool nice look is not the way to go..
I have the same size engine (Turbo) with the Weber side draft carb.
It makes power.
You could/should run with either the Dual Webers (NO ICT 34 carbs) but the 40mm Kadron will work nicely if not Webers or Delortos...the last three being the best choice. I have seen them all.
The 34 ICT will work with the stock 1600cc and the Kadrons with a 1641 (87mm) setup with or w/o a special cam. The 110 is a nice mileage street cam.
Bound to be a difference of opinions thats for sure...just mine here. |

My educated guess is at 4,000 rpm - you'll lose about 15 to 20 SAE HP with a stock single Solex.
At 4500 rpm - the loss rises to over 20 SAE HP, because the HP will be dropping once the revs go beyond 4K on a 1776cc running a stock Solex.
Bottom line: With a single 34 PICT Solex and stock camshaft - your torque curve will be in decline by 3,000 rpm on a 1776cc air cooler.
Dependent on the grind of the camshaft, the torque curve with duals will be nice and flat or rising until 3500 rpm.
Kaddy Shack has a chart comparing a stock 1600 with an upgrade to Kads.

Note the torque curve for the 1.4 to 1 ratio rockers. It's solid until about 3500 rpm.

I have a 1776 with a single 40IDF. Runs like a champ, but I am fouling plugs now. Trying my best to get it jetted right. |

That Zenith looks to be a very nice center mount set up.
It's not at all as bodacious like some others I've seen, but it should get the job done with regards to producing torque at higher revs for passing or getting onto the freeway.
Is that air cleaner assembly gutted and fitted with a full flow or is it stock?

On the Zenith and IDF 40 center mount set ups, what's the limit on venturi size before the end castings get in the way?
I've seen the end castings shown below below, which are pricey and rarely get a mention on Samba.

the "k&n" type air cleaner & cut-out mod made a HUGE difference.
and so did the effort i put into ensuring proper manifold & and intake air heat.

and so did all the work i did on the heads.

the carb itself is just one piece of the engine "system".

My 34PICT with 1776/110 cam does great on the highway in a Westy... I also like the stock look... unless Pete gives me a Zenith! |

I would like to see someone make a well heated 360 degree single 2 barrel carb manifold.
