View original topic: Fried points, then nothing...

Guys/Gals;

cleaned up my motor last night w/ some engine-cleaner foam from my FLAPS.

Went to start it today, which did nothing but fry the wire in the points. I pulled them out, threw in a new one and set the gap, went to start it and NOTHING happened... no clicks, no more fried wire, no nothing.

Anybody have an idea here as to what it could be?!

Troubleshoot. Check Fuses, coil, 12v power, etc. Your motor should still turn via the starter.

maybe the coil is shorted out, it would explain why the wire fried, normally that cannot happen

Did you forget to put the rotor back on? I can't count how many times I've done this.

burned condenser?

oops.

Guys,

Okay, I swapped out condensors and points, set the gap, then it turned the engine over a few times. Tried again and it wouldn't do anything, no clicks at all.

So I went back there and pulled dist cap off, touched the wire under the rotor, went back to start it and same thing... turned over a few times, then on the second attempt, it did nothing again.

Checked all fuses, they're good.. everything looks right.

I'm stumped! Anyone see anything wrong in this photo?

No clicks as in starter does not engage? If so, the problem isn't in the distributor but rather in the starter or ignition switch.

the wire on those points is too short! but it should work

Check the resistance of the coil or try a different coil

How do I check the coil?

modok Sun May 20, 2012 3:45 pm

you can check the primary resistance with an ohm meter, should be approx 3 ohms, or put it on another car and see if it runs ok,

Or pull the distributor out a half inch, take the cap off, hook one plug wire to the coil with an old plug in it with the gap set at 3/16-1/4 inch, turn on the power and spin the dist and see if it appears to give a good spark

Folks,

Embarrassingly, it was simply a dead battery the whole time. I misread the reading on my battery charger, so thought it was good the whole time.

Thanks again for all of your input though!
