just looked at appletree
you dont want the 14'' rack and pinion thats for sandrails you'll break it
you'd be way better off with their HD rack http://www.appletreeauto.com/product.php?productid=17882&cat=19&page=1
looks like a knock off of the Wright Rack |

I will re-use the rear drum brakes, king pins, carriers, spindles, and shocks currently on my buggy. I know I need tie rods, but have no idea what, yet. Haven't figured out how I am going to connect the steering to a front end that is pushed 2.5" out from stock. I guess that's part of the fun, right? |

Looks good
If you can get a hold of a set of Type 3 rear brake drums and backing plates they work better they are 10 mm wider than type 1 's
what kind of king pins, carriers, spindles, and shocks do you have currently
why go only 2.5" out from stock I would go at least 4" maybe 6" max same cost involved
aluminum tie rods (tube not solid-tube is stronger) buy 3 so you have a spare
you'll need a pair of universal joints similar to http://www.appletreeauto.com/product.php?productid=18023&cat=85&page=1 I went to the junkyard and hack sawed a pair out also need some sort of bearings to mount on the interior to hold the steering wheel, I made my own out of 1-1/2 tubing and teflon
I'll have to take some picture one of these days if I ever get a day off some picture are worth a thousands words or so they say |

The arms I plan to get from Avery's are going to be setup with type 2 bearing carriers. I was planning to run type 2 backing plates and brake hardware.
The king pins, carriers, spindles and shocks are all coming off my old sand rail. The shocks are bilstein and the other components are stock units but have been reinforced with plate for strength. I took a couple of pictures but they are too large to upload to the site. If you have an email I can send them to you and see what you think.
The reason for going 2.5 inches instead of 4 or 6? I dunno? Because my front arms will be about 2.5 inches longer? What possible advantage could I gain from extending it out to six inches? I think it would just make it easier to get high centered on a razor backs in the dunes.
If i did extend my front, does that mean I will not be able to keep my stock steering column? I really like the idea of having a key and turn signals.
I guess those pictures would really clear a lot of things up for me.

Brett YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR STEERING SHAFT NO MATTER WHAT 1ST OF ALL YOUR GOING WITH RACK AND PINION WHICH WILL BE MOUNTED TO THE CENTER OF YOUR BEAM PLUS YOUR GOING 2-1/2 LONGER A GOOD FABRICATOR CAN UTILIZE YOUR STOCK WHEEL / TURN SIGNAL ETC. BUT IT MIGHT BE EASIER TO THROW A KEY SWITCH SOMEWHERE ON THE DASH AND A TURN SIGNAL SWITCH LIKE I DID IN THE LAST PIC
THIS SITE REALLY MAKES IT A PAIN IN THE ASS TO TYPE IF YOU QUOTE ANYTHING CAUSE YOU CANT SEE WTF YOU TYPING TIL YOU GET TO THE END AND FIND OUT THE F'N CAPS LOCK F'N BUTTON WAS ON ANTHOW
1ST 2 PIC ARE FROM MY 1969 THE LAST IS FROM MY 1961
LONGER WHEELBASE IS FASTER AND SMOOTHER IF YOUR GONNA GET STUCK ON ARAZORBACK 4" 6" AINT GONNA MAKE ANYDIFFERENCE
JEEZE I NEED ABEER THIS SITE IS PISSIN ME OFF

Quote: The Kaddie Shack has a kit that consists of some vw thing rear suspension components that claims 10.5 inches of travel with two minor mods, one being to the spring plates. http://shop.kaddieshack.com/IRS-OFF-ROAD-105-TRAVEL-KIT-OR1.htm
I have these parts, purchased separately. Not sure if I'm going to use them.
if you increase the ride height with these, and the body height with a 3" lift, rou raise the center of gravity but do not increase the track width. seems to me if you go up you should also go wider. it's a rollover thing. |
