Getting parts in for a 2110 for my 70 westy bus.
Parts so far:
AS41 case, shuffle pinned & full flowed etc
CB 82mm 8 dowel chevy crank
Lightened & balanced flywheel
DRD 5.4 chevy H-beam rods
Mahle 90.5 stroker pistons/barrels
Gene Berg oil pump
Engle FK-8
Scat lightweight lifters
Scat straight cut cam gears
Chromoly pushrods
Bugpack 1.4:1 rockers
DRD heads with 42x38 valves ( I think ) ported and polished etc.
Bugpack 1 5/8 merged header & mondo muffler
I've got Italian Weber 40IDF's ATM, just wondering if going up to 44's might be better? |

I would go with 44IDFs or 45 Dellortos. |

I vote dells web cam and good header set up for heat. Let the motor breathe it will run cooler and stronger/longer.
I just looked over your build again do not run scat lifters with an engle cam, engle lifters or cb lightweight lifters. |

You can use the 40's with 32mm venturies or get a set of 44's with 34mm venturies. On a heavy Westy Bus I would change to an Engle FK-7 cam. The FK-8 is too radical for s street driven Bus. |

AS41 case, shuffle pinned & full flowed etc - You don't need shuffle pins.
CB 82mm 8 dowel chevy crank - VW journal
Lightened & balanced flywheel - stock weight flywheel is fine.
DRD 5.4 chevy H-beam rods - I beam rods are fine.
Mahle 90.5 stroker pistons/barrels
Gene Berg oil pump
Engle FK-8 - Smaller cam, unless you are going to race it.
Scat lightweight lifters - Engle lifters!!
Scat straight cut cam gears - Don't need straights unless you like to hear the gear whine.
Chromoly pushrods
Bugpack 1.4:1 rockers
DRD heads with 42x38 valves ( I think ) ported and polished etc. - DRD L5's are a much better match, again, unless you are going to race this Bus.
Bugpack 1 5/8 merged header & mondo muffler

hot VW's did a several part article on a 2006cc engine build, one of Steve Phillips' 'recipe engines' a few months ago that is awesome to drive in a bus. My good friend Greg Urrutia built one of those 2006's a put it in the Shasta bus, that we have done the BeetleBall 24 in. I wouldn't have thought the 40IDFs would have been enough, but the relatively small valves and high velocity ports, those small carbs give low end 'drive away torque' like no other. I drove that bus for thousands of miles, on the '24', the Queen Mary to Vegas rally topping out at over 100mph in the '65 bus, through death valley and over the Sierra-Nevadas. Drivabiblity like no other bus engine. You can almost let out the clutch at idle, and accelerate away by rolling into the throttle, no hesitation, no bucking or jerking. Awesome torque up to 4,000 rpm. But after 4k, it's over and done, torque falls like a stone. You must be sure the bus is geared for that.
Consider an A1 sidewinder for bus in 1-1/2" and matching big heater boxes. Long primaries for enhanced low-end torque, good design for ground and rear bumper clearance. The only nuisance is having to remove the muffler to adjust the right side valves, but worth the tradeoff IMO. |

I vote 40 Dells with 34 vents. It's a happy middle between 40 idfs and 44 idfs. Although I think it will run perfectly fine with a set of 45s jetted right. I would also swap the lifters for at least engles or better yet cb lightwieghts, for 42*37s your in 1 5/8" territory. No ifs ands or buts. Looking forward to seeing that engine completed using the fk8. |

What's wrong with Scat lifters being run with Engle cams? |

Seriously?? Do a search on scat lifters, you don't want that s**t in your new engine. It's best to always match cam and lifters from the same manufacturer otherwise it's just a gamble to see if they will last. There are a couple of exceptions, tool steel lifters and CB's lightweight racing lifters seem to be compatible with just about every cam. |

X2 on the cam. Too much duration for a 2110 in a heavy bus. Since you have the 1,4 rockers already, down grade to an FK7 to get the torque down where you need it.
Yeah, DITCH the straight cuts.
I would recommend the Panchito heads for a bus, because those heads have about the best ports on the market for torque. Timms stage 2´s are not bad either, but it sort of depends where you want your power. DRD heads are better suited for high rpm engines where torque and driveability takes second place in the whish box, due to the rather large volume intake ports.

The lifter face and cam lobes are ground to match each other. The scat lifters have traditionally not matched up well with anything other than scat cams. If you use the cam and lifters from the same manufacturer you are increasing the chance of long cam/lifter life. There may also be a metallurgy problem with the scat lifters which causes them to pit after short mileage.
You'll get guys like me that say only use scat lifters with scat cams, you'll get a few guys that have had no problems with scat lifters and then you'll get the scat response to their lifter problems........................................... |
