Hi, is anybody have any experience with this carb on a 1600 D/P?
Besides the location of the chocke, is 38/38 better carb all the way around then a 32/36 progressive?

modok Fri Sep 21, 2012 7:14 pm

both carbs are actually too big for a 50HP 1600

The 32/36 is 50% too big
the 38 is 100% too big

The only way a synchronous 38 would make sense is on a divided manifold, like those intended for a bugspray or DCNF, but it would probably not clear the shroud, is it a type-3?

Out of the box on a 1600 with a 100 cam. It ran great!

I was under the impression it's the same manifold design as a progressive....
A waste of time IMO, but to be fair I have not tried one of these on anything.

If you really are into using a center mount set up go for a real weber, like an IDF.

No electric Choke....I went to the snow at Big Bear mountain last year with my sons VW club, it was 8%, i saw a couple of bugs with single idf's having a hell of a time trying to keep the car idle or even starting but one of then with a 32/36 progressive carb had no issues what so ever...I had no problems with the 34 pic3 in our Ghia starting.

Thats why i find the 38/38 has its potential....not enough out there yet to get a real good feedback.....Also it maybe a type of carb that will work well with a 1776,1835 or 1914 (larger engines) but may not be a good choice for the stock 1600... I hope they become more popular and we get more feedback on it.

I just installed one on a friends 1600 dual port, all stock except a 009 distributor, mild cb performance cam and straight cut gears. I'm still tuning it... Trying to find the happy medium between performance and mileage. When I hit the throttle hard it goes like hell but the speedo and the fuel gauge go in opposite directions. For the novice installer like myself there is a bit of fitting/cutting as per the instructions which I did with a pipe cutter, not a hack saw, then theres other little things Hot VW's didn't do that that I did to make it a little cleaner install. On this particular car I shortened the throttle cable with a custom made 5/32 press on fitting(not with the funky screw on fitting that will hit the shroud with this kit), made an adapter from 5mm fuel hose to the 1/4 fuel hose that the egas carb uses( clamping 1/4 inch fuel hose on a stock fuel pump is asking for trouble in my opinion) and then I put a 90 degree fitting on the vent hose at the air filter so it wouldn't kink.

No, it dumps into a single tube at the bottom of the intake.

Commonly known as a "plenum" manifold, as opposed to an isolated runner manifold.

White Smoke!!! The pope is dead :(

No good sign for me too...

You guys are gonna find out real quick thoe junky carbs will get horrable gas milage.

808OvalGreasemonkey Sat Feb 16, 2013 12:21 pm

I found out real quick that my perfectly tuned/wideband tuned & jetted 44idf's on a 2110 motor gets horrible mileage as well!! lol

jvulich Sat Feb 16, 2013 1:06 pm

Gotta pay to play...

modok Sat Feb 16, 2013 1:55 pm

You can only tune the carb to do what it is capable of doing.
