So it sounds like the EMPI exhaust I've got is the exact same situation as the Tri-Mil then, as far as heat risers are concerned.
I don't really have any problems with the car, the only exception is that when it's below about 40F outside, the engine sounds a little rough and spitty for the first couple of minutes of driving, but it drives fine. (I know to drive off straight away, btw, and not let it idle). I'm guessing it's probably due to lack of intake manifold heat. But after that first couple minutes it's great, and when the weather's warm there's no problems at all, and my MPG's are high 20's easy.
I think I might chance it on the Tri-Mil and see how it goes.

build a custom Dynomax or Magnaflow muffler. I built a Dynomax for my last engine= sounded good... but was also stroked, bored, had dual Webers and nice cam/heads etc. Muffler ID/OD are vital though. Personally, there are VW mufflers that sound better than others, but 90% of them dont sound mean in any way. Loud does not necessarily mean tough. And as John said, you will be a cop magnet. I ran stingers and glasspacks for years. They make older guys think you are an attention hungry-young dumb kid! They also piss off your neighbors when you get home late, or leave early. Many of them actually are detrimental for your engine if you lose all your backpressure. Don't spend your money anywhere until you do some heavy reading.

i think im going to go with a magnaflow set up. they have more of the sound im looking for. i have a friend who has just put on on its not bad so im off thanks guys :)
