That speedo is a Veigel, installed almost exclusively on 1950 to 52 Barndoors. It looks OK except that the pointer needle needs to be straight, not tapered/pointed. How about making some full scale stuff? Most of the Barndoor projects out there are missing a truckload of hard to find parts, and not everything is reproed currently. |

Difficult to see in 1/16th scale...it is tweaked to be visible in such a small scale and many details have been omitted, however, I will make this change. Thanks for that heads-up! |

Simplifed for 1/16th scale printing...a more accurate Veigel. All of the references I have show a pointed needle, which is much more of a blunt point than what I had before, but I eliminated the taper and made a straight parallel edged needle. I also changed the fonts to replicate a more accurate representation. Although the previous font was ficticious, it printed and displayed well in my 1/16th scale test print. I will have to see if this font looks good when printed or not. Anyhow, here it is.

looks nice, the face has just enough detail now. are you going to turn on the ignition? well i guess not, you would need to put a key in.... |

Hello all. I tweaked the Veigel one last time, I am calling this part done. I needed to thicken the lines a bit, including the speed call-out fonts. As you can see from the print test (reversed for now), the fine print and odometer disappear completely. The ruler is in inches...the diameter is about 0.236" (5.988 mm). Not much to see in this scale! Just for eye-candy, I might do a full authentic version later, just to show the artwork and how a more realistic gauge face will look, but again, this is for a 1/16 scale model....such fine details vanish at that size.

Great efforts so far ! I have been a cad designer for yrs too. But don't forget to give that model a soul. everything you designed so far is very square and true to dimensions, but don't forget the real deal was designed back in 49 and had some odd shapes in parts and also naturally shaped areas other than circles and squares, f.i. the rear brake light glass is a compound curved piece not as flat as you designed it. also the original has so many neat flaws, that probably can't be scaled down anyways. It's not as perfect as the CAD model will end up with. that's why old cars have soul, and modern cad designed cars are transportation only.
just pointing out. |

Thanks for the compliments djfordmanjack. Yes, your point is a tricky one. In 1/16th scale, some things are invisible to the eye and I can get away with a vast majority of them, but I want to keep those inaccuracies to the minimum. This is a virtual build so far. I have no access to any real examples, so I am giving my best effort from photos and exact dimensions when I can get them.
Capturing the soul of this creature is why I am doing this project in the first place. Thats what scale modeling is all about! I hope everyone is enjoying the progress as this project is coming to life....step-by-step. |

Here's the latest update:
I added the steering column, and made a proper horn button. Does everything look alright here? I think I am pretty close to calling this as "ready".

isn't the outer ring on the Barny horn button ribbed? Or are early ones smooth? |

I enter my evidence: http://www.barndoor.dk/detaljer20.htm
It seems to match what is in the '52 owners manual as well. I hope I got the correct button on this thing! |

Nice, never knew that. We are lucky to even find a 54 in Australia.. |

My horn button from 52 is smooth too. You have realistics reflects on the right of the steering wheel you modelised. Crazy job. |

Thanks man! Now for some eye-candy. Here's one more...this time I adjusted the blue to better resemble L-31 Dove Blue....oh, and I added the steering wheel. This assembly is just temporary, I need to set the column into the dash pod and make a cavity for proper fitment...then add the column clamp. This will all happen once I get the frame and front-end done. That's next, but for now...this is what we have so far. The results are better than I expected. Thanks for everyone's continued support and interest.

I revised the head posting (see page 1), next I will be doing some Engine stuff.
A) Solex 26 VFIS (dimensions FOUND...thanks Capriacci!)
B) Bosch VE 4 BRS 383 Distributor (looking for dimensions now)
C) Fuel Pressure regulator (next)
At this time, I also want to thank everyone here who has been helping me along. I couldn't do this without your help. I knew I came to the right place!
I hope you guys are feeling that the efforts are getting decent results. I will continue to do the best I possibly can. I might even re-do the Veigel once more and go for total realism...I will be looking into a finer printing method for the speedo face. I will need to do the same for the I.D. plate, various info decals and the Bosch badge that is on the distributor. |
