I might be over thinking this but I cant figure out how this is supposed to be routed. Im running an external oil cooler with a thermo switch for the fan. Here are some pics.

Any help would be great : )

I'd call the manufacturer; it states made in USA, so they should speak English. I'm surprised there was not an instruction sheet.

On my Beetle and on my Thing, I mounted the thermostat to the "firewall" with bulkhead fittings. The aux oil coolers were mounted above or next to the transaxle.

Path of cold oil is illustrated.

Ignore the cylinder in the center of the diagram.

Re: the switch, place it in the line from the cooler that returns oil to the engine.
Confirm that the "amp rating" of the switch can handle switching on the fan without a relay; some switches require a relay to operate the fan.

Good luck, Mondshine

Ok, now I want one. I just looked over their website, but they do not list pricing. This probably means you have to buy through a middleman. Who is, where is the middleman? Website? Thanks, Bob

And I will just add this.....

And in my mind (a bizarre place) I believe thermostat switch for fan should be placed at out put of oil cooler....

Thanks for all the great pics.
They will help out tremendously. :D

do you see the arrows??? just plum it so the oil is going the way the arows go. in to the thermo(from oil filter outlet),out to cooler, back into thermo, then to caseinlet.

I agree with installing the fan sw in outlet of cooler. No reason to run fan when not needed. I installed a Derale Hyper cool cooler in my bug that was running too hot 230-240 range (2275 engine). I made a huge difference. Runs at the 180 deg mark even in summer.

That's how I currently have the fan switch run.

(mark tucker)Arrows? Just kidding.
Thanks.

A QUESTION HERE,

WHAT WOULD BE THE OUTCOME IF THE OIL THERMO WAS PLUMBED IN UPSIDE DOWN,THE WRONG WAY SO TO SPEAK??

mark tucker Thu Mar 13, 2014 9:51 pm

fix it.so to speak.

digyalater Fri Mar 14, 2014 6:47 pm

um yeah...........that's a certainty........but would it cause any damage to the engine if you did plumb it the wrong way :?: :?:

mondshine Sat Mar 15, 2014 8:15 am

I suppose that would depend on how you plumbed it wrong.
I doubt any damage could occur unless the thermostat was hot (too hot to hold in your hand) when you installed it.
You would have had a warning light or gauge indicating low or no oil pressure, and (hopefully) shut down immediately.
Just install it as the instructions state, and you'll be fine.

ok time for me to fess up here,of just what i have done.

i had plumbed from the outlet of engine,to inlet filter, then outlet of filter to the inlet oil thermo, outlet of thermo to inlet oil cooler, outlet of cooler back to return thermo, from there back to return of the engine oil pump.

prior to hooking all this up,with the outlet and return hoses from and to the engine oil pump disconnected, and the oil filter pre-primed with oil, i manually hand pumped with oil through the whole system until i had a good oil return, flushing any debris out,and insuring i had a oil return back, before i connected the hoses onto the outlet and return oil fitttings on the engine pump cover.

as far as the thermo after running the engine,i found that i had installed it upside down.
i had the outlet hose from the filter going to the larger section of the thermo, where it should have been the smaller section of the thermo, and then onto the cooler, and onwards back to the engine.

on start up oil light went out as it should,it ran real nice and smooth, all looked real good, very happy.
a few more startups,no road trips, give the throttle a little squirt,i could here a squeel, bit like a fan belt slipping.......didnt sound right......engine started to idle rough..............shut it down...........this is when i re-checked all and discovered the upside down back to front oil thermo.
i feel i may have starved the return oil back to the engine oil gallery, with the incorrect thermo setup, but at all times it was running, the oil pressure light was not on,telling me it had pressure.

Well, that CB thermostat sure looks like the Derale 13011 unit whose instructions I posted previously.
Just plumb it the way the instructions state and you should be fine.

Judging by the barb fittings in your photos, I assume you will be using some sort of rubber hose. Many people will tell you that's OK, but it would scare the pants off of me. If a hose should burst while you are driving, you will have little or no warning, except maybe a big blue cloud behind you, or a pissed off tailgater with his wipers smearing your engine oil all over his windshield.

Make sure your hose is rated for hot oil, and route it away from hot exhaust components.
Good luck, Mondshine

digyalater Sat Mar 15, 2014 5:49 pm

yes, using rubber hose rated to 2400 psi,and yes again to the barbed fittings and hose clamps..........not the best setup at all.

as said in my previous post,i did set the thermostat up wrong
thanks for your feedback on this, but maybe just have another read of that post again

Ok I finally finished this install but its not working. I lost about 10PSI and after running for about 15min in the garage the temp did not go up.
Did I do it wrong?
The lines feel warm except the top line coming from the cooler.
(right top in pic)Maybe I plumbed it wrong.

I doubt seriously in 15 minutes oil was even mildly warm.... Drive it for an hour...
