View original topic: Transmission knock when turn off

I could not find anything close to my problem on a search so he it goes ..

I have a 2276cc engine coupled with a freeway flyer transmission. The issue is that after I drive it and park it when I put it in 1st gear and turn the switch on and off again I feel a knock from the transmission like something is engaging in the tranny. If I leave it in neutral and do the same nothing as described happens. Stumped !!

start checking for loose stuff, check gearlube for dibris.

Can you be more specific? Loose stuff? On the tranny or what? Gearlube ? Are you talking about the level of fluid in the tranny?
Thanks !

Swing axle or IRS trans?
Worn axle spade or fulcrum plates in swingaxle or loose or worn CV joint on IRS can be problems with making noise.
There are many other things too.
More information on what transaxle you have, mileage on it, how is it built, gearing, making any other noises while driving?

It is a IRS . No noise when driving. The trans. is in good shape. Shifting normal. I have around 500 miles on the new engine. Trans came with the car from PO.

Do you have an electric fuel pump or other electric device mounted near the tranny?

So the knock happens with the clutch pedal pushed in? But not let out in neutral right? I would guess throwout bearing or release fork..

The only part I have mounted near the tranny is the electric oil cooler. It is bolted to the car, not the tranny. Electric pump mounted on the front below the tank.

The knock (and it is a physical knock) happens w/o pushing the clutch pedal. When I turn the car off, then put it in 1st. gear and turn the ignition to the "on" position and back to the "off" position it happens. If I repeat this ... no knock. If I take it for a spin and do the same, the knock happens again. !

Driving me nuts !

Easy fix. When you turn it off. Leave it off...... No need to fiddle with the ignition switch like your doing. Sounds like your over thinking this.

I agree that might be the easy fix :) ... However it is not normal behavior, which indicates a potential problem or breakdown. I guess it is the way my engineering mind works on these things. Being proactive.

Since the only possible electrical item on the trans is the backup light sw, I doubt the issue is in the trans. I am thinking you have something going on where the starter bumps when you turn the key back on, or possibly you are igniting unburned fuel in one of the cylinders which is bumping the engine. Have someone watch the crank pulley for movement while you do your key on in nuetral. Or just don't turn the key back on.

best idea I have read, yeah maybe the motor is being bumped when you turn on the key switch to run, and if the car is in gear, the tranny is bumped by the ignition. try the test with tranny in gear but with clutch peddle depressed and see if issue goes away.
or try a repeat test and see if problem goes away after a repeat. seems to me that after you burn off any remaining fuel in your test, the second test will not have the same result. (ie all the unburnt fuel is consumed during the first cycle of this test, so the second time you test, there will be no bump

on ,off then onagain & knock, it's firing a cylinder. dont wory about it& dont keep effing with the switch or you may be changeing it.
