Rebuilding a stock late model Beetle fuel injected engine and there are 2 different Mahle sets. Is one better than the other and why?

And don't say the bottom because the top only comes with one piston ;)

Glenn, the top forged ones are better but on a stock engine they are over kill.
You got my second gift, yes?

Yes... no rush on the rest.

I'd go with AA myself. The Mahle sets I've run across have been unsightly and off out of the box. I thought I remember hearing that AA was making the Mahle sets these days?

Heard the same thing about AA and Mahle being the same thing.

The cast pistons have longer skirts, so they'll need to be trimmed if using a C/W crank. I would vote on the forged set, just because of the lean tune of the stock FI system and the higher head temperatures.

Also, because of the a/f ratio, I believe it's important that the static compression gets set per the manual.
