Just wanted to get some oppinions on this. Before I pulled the motor out of my bug it ran ok......after I put it back it is very slow to accelerate. Only thing I did was took the generator, stand, intake, carb and tin off. Also added a header and hideaway muff. I figure I must have an air leak at the intake. Any ideas?? The car starts and idols fine but just wont rev much (slow). It is a stock 65' 1200. The engine was out quite a few months. Can you check for air leaks with anything besides starting fluid? Dont want to trash the new paint?

Check the throttle cable position on the carb. You may need to tighten it. It also could be your timing on your distributor (or how some stupid people say...your dizzy man!) May want to re-set that. Its proabbly something simple. Have a Idiot Manual?

I dont think its the throttle cable cuz I took it off and tried it manually and it was the same. The timing wasnt changed in the process, but it could be that I guess. Maybe I should just get tune up parts ( points, rotor, plugs, cap, wires ) and do them one at a time to see what helps. Its probly time anyway. Guess I should check the valve gap too. I think I have a Haynes around here somewhere. I still have a feeling its a leak at the intake or carb. Ive heard you can spray starting fluid around the mounting areas to see if it speeds up or not. If it does....theres a leak. Just dont want to mess up the new paint, or start a fire!!! Would WD-40 work the same?
