In other words, it makes it easier for the decklid to fall on your head? |

Arnie,
You need to get the stay to work properly before the spring can do any good. The prop will hold the lid up (without the spring) if you lift the lid up and then pull the tab at the elbow towards you. It's a little sketchy without the spring and it can (and will) drop on your head if you bump it while working in the engine compartment. If it doesn't hold, then you need to work out the mechanics of the prop before putting on the spring.

One more question now I have seen the front side how does it work, I assume as you open the lid the stay is forced back by the spring, but what is it that holds the lid up? Is it that centre hole I can see, where its pressed through that engages on something?

When you lift up the engine lid, the prop tab (see photo) slides up the side of the engine compartment wall along the tab on the body. Once it gets to the top of the body tab, the spring pulls it towards you (or you pull it if you don't have a spring) and the tab ends up sitting on top of the body tab (bottom photo)
Hope this answers your questions. Good luck!

Hey doveblue3,
You noticed my air cleaner in the background, eh? I'll shoot a photo of them later and explain what they are if you like.

Here's a couple of photos of the air cleaners I made for my Kadrons. Fashioned them out of a couple of vintage aluminum food cannisters and lids.

They look like vintage taco shell warmers.
I expect chicken fajitas at the next OCTO.
Seriously though, those are pretty cool |

There is no mention yet unless I have missed it that this tab wears, If it is worn and not flat on top the prop will have a hard job sitting on it, and will probably slide off, you may have to re-build it up with some weld. |

Now that you mention it, they do resemble the tortilla warmers at my local mexican food hangout... Do you want flour or corn tortillas with your fajitas? |

Just wanted to say that I have got the engine lid stay working now, even found it had a spring too! All the problem I had was that the bracket on the bus was bent out causing the stay to not rest on the lip, once i'd eased it back and hooked the spring over the stay it worked great. Glad I had the reference from here to see in principle how it worked, another victory for the samba!! :D
Thanks to all that commented/posted pics etc

i installed my prop but am a little confused concering the slot that is in the prop mount on the body. i am assuming the tap that sticks out 90* on the prop arm does not slide in the slot that is cut into the mount. at least i could not get mine to work at all with it in there. does the tab slide on the outside of the body mount before it engauges the slot where the lid is held open? what is the purpose of that slot? |

Here's a photo of the backside of the body mount:
That shows the tab of the prop arm goes into the slot and then held by the spring. Hope that helps. |

i was wondering about the tab on the arm that sticks out 90*, the one closest to the arm rivit. i was wanting to know if the tab has to stick in the 2 inch log slot in the body mount . |
