Hi Everyone,
I just installed my new Rancho transaxle and my freshly built 2 liter engine into the beetle and after setting the clutch free play, am unable to engage any gear. At this point I have checked the following:
1. Clutch cable / pedal cluster / bowden tube. No visible issues.
2. Shifter / bushings / couplers. No visible issues.
I do know that I am in neutral, but for one reason or another are unable to engage a gear. The only logical conclusions I have left are:
1. Flywheel / pressure plate issue.
2. Transaxle.
Has anyone encountered this problem? Any hints / advice on to what other checks I can do before I pull the engine / transaxle out?
Cheers,
Paul |

The metal plate under the shifter, could it have been flipped or turned around? |

 Nothing against Rancho but what I have happened to me when selling a trans to a customer they hit the hockey stick and nocked it out of alignment and thought it was in Neutral.
What I did was to tell and show the customer that it was in Neutral and also to be carefull when installing.
You may have the same issue...check with Rancho. |

I checked that first, and unfortunately it is installed correctly. Being a superbeetle, it has the late model plate, i.e. two ribs. I placed the narrower / shorter rib closest to the driver. |

That's true, I only mentioned Rancho because the transaxle is a pro street version, thinking that other members came across issues with performance transaxles.
Although they didn't show me that it was in neutral, i checked that first before installing into the car. I must admit, I didn't try to shift through the gears. I also personally collected the transaxle from rancho, so I was careful not to damage / knock it during transit and installation.
It's got me stumped! |
