Hi everybody. My name is Ethan and on Saturday I had my dream come true and got a spiffy new Baja bug as my first car! I'M IN LOVE!
Unfortunately, it doesn't run very well. It died on our way home (dad and strangers had to push) and we got stranded at the school yesterday when my dad was giving me driving lessons
I think it has a vacuum leak but I'm not sure. I was wondering if the pipes in the picture needed to be plugged or if they are just left open? Thanks for your time.

Hi, Those are the preheat for the manifold and carb, to keep your manifold from icing .. post your engine specs, it helps us troubleshoot...if your running that manifold, and single carb, then yes, you want them hooked up, but I would make sure that the tubes are not plugged with carbon, or your wasting your time,,, A good manual is also a must..... |

They are meant for exhaust gases to heat the intake charge. They can be left unconnected, but driveability can suffer. I have a hard time believing they can leave you stranded.
You should probably have a basic tuneup with points and plugs and filter (s). |

Is your manifold rusty?, I have seen them get water between the intake tube and the preheat tube and rust through, this is under the aluminum.
You can find manifolds in the classifieds cheap.
