When adjusting valve clearances, how much resistance should there be on the feeler gauge?

I can just about get a 0.006" in the gap (no chance with a 0.008"), but it is tight. Should it be eased back a little so that I can move the 0.006" feeler in the gap without feeling any resistance?

It should be a 'slight drag'

I interpret this as needing to be pulled a bit rather than falling out resistance free. If you have to really tug on it, like taking candy from a baby, then it's too tight :)

My three year old daughter acts like chocolate is some kind of kiddy crack. I know all about taking candy from a baby.

I will have to adjust them so they're not so tight. Cheers.

Get a go - no go feeler gauge.

Slight drag.

Agree. I finally got a set of these 2 or so years ago, should have bought them sooner

X2 on the go/no-go gauges.

Most are typically up .001" on the no-go side. I saw some long ago...expensive ones...that noted they were .0005" on the no-go side for those who need that type of tolerance. Might have been Starrett.

or use .005- falls thru and .007- tight as a fishes arse ------simple

I'd say 0.007 = impossible. Really, if someone does the 0.005 / 0.006 / 0.007 dance enuff, they will soon develop a feel for 0.006.

yup like the dr said try a .005 if it falls out it's good. but just to be clear IT DOSENT MATTER. the main thing is to get them all the same.+-.002 should be fine as long as there all the same# so if you shoot for 6 and get them all .005 your good.if you get them all .007 your good.,but if you get some 7 and some 4-5 you need to redoo it. it should be a simple & fast operation.your looking for something rong or something changeing indacating somethen is not quite right or .....dead

One other thing....

When doing the adjustment use your index finger and thumb (on adjuster screw) to feel for the .006 adjustment not a screwdriver. Do this and I guarantee you will actually feel the adjustment very accurately.

Also be sure and remove the adjuster screw to check for any wear on the end. Also have a look at the valve tip.

I actually run 0.005" on my intakes and 0.006" on my exhausts...gotta shave another 0.00001 seconds off of my stoplight to stoplight times ya know...
